Liverpool's flawless start to the 2024/25 season continued on Sunday as they eased to a 3-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford, in which Mohamed Salah scored the final goal.
Yet, amidst all the wild celebrations in the away end, Liverpool were to be dealt a blow after the full-time whistle with Salah admitting he may well be in his final season at Anfield.
Many have suspected that Salah would leave Liverpool given both his high salary and advancing years, especially with the riches of Saudi Arabia now very much an option for players, but fans had hoped the forward would sign a contract extension.
"Yeah, to be fair, I was coming to the game, I said look it could be a last time," he told Sky Sports.
"Nobody talked to me yet about contracts. So, I'm just like, okay I'm playing my last season here, my last game here with Liverpool.
"It's not up to me, but nobody has talked to me about this from the club, but we will see."
Fans hope Salah is trying to force Liverpool's hand
Liverpool fans don't want Salah to leave the club, his value to them has been staggering since his arrival, as is made clear by his stunning record at Old Trafford.
Since signing for the Reds, the Egyptian has scored 10 goals at the home of Liverpool's most-hated rival.
For context, that is as many as Anthony Martial and only seven less than Cristiano Ronaldo from January 2021.
It could well be the case that Salah publicly released such a statement in order to push Liverpool's technical department into a corner.
They know how unpopular a move it would be to lose Salah, and he has put the ball in their court off the back of scoring yet another pivotal goal at Old Trafford.
