APremier Leaguefootballer has been arrested in London on suspicion of two counts of assault and one of altercation.

The player, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is 29 years old and an international with his country.

In the UK, except in exceptional circumstances, a detainee cannot be named until a formal charge is made against him.

According to police sources consulted by the BBC, the police arrested the footballer on Friday night.

The victim was taken to hospital with a number of injuries which police said were not life-threatening.

The footballer has been released on bail pending further investigation.
