Chelsea's hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League are hanging by a thread after a 2-0 loss at Real Madrid on Wednesday night.

Although the Blues have been in dreadful form domestically, they actually began brightly at the Santiago Bernabeu, creating early chances for Joao Felix and Raheem Sterling.

Neither opportunity was taken, though, and Karim Benzema made them pay, opening the scoring with a tap-in after Kepa Arrizabalaga could only parry Vinicius Junior's close-range volley.

Any hope Chelsea had of turning the game around ended when Ben Chilwell was shown a straight red card for pulling back Rodrygo as the Brazilian was bearing down on goal.

Consequently, Frank Lampard's team have it all to do when the two sides meet again in the second leg at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night.
