Premier League star films himself taking drugs: Alarm bells ring over laughing gas use in football

Yves Bissouma, a Premier League footballer who is paid more than 64,200 a week, filmed himself consuming laughing gas (nitrous oxide or hippy crack) in a balloon.

The footage of the 27-year-old Tottenham midfielder was posted by himself on Snapchat just days before the start of the season.

The English press reports that the former Brighton and Lille player consumed laughing gas at a party in London after Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham's final pre-season match against Bayern Munich.

The footage shows Bissouma consuming nitrous oxide in a chauffeur-driven limousine transporting him and his friends.

Yves Bissouma: I want to apologise for these videos

Yves Bissouma has already apologised for his "serious lack of judgement".

"I want to apologise for these videos. This was a serious lack of judgement. I understand the seriousness of this and the health risks involved, and I also take my responsibility as a footballer and role model very seriously," Bissouma shared in a statement.

Possession of laughing gas (nitrous oxide or hippy crack) to get high has been illegal in Britain since last year and the Tottenham player could face criminal charges.

One Premier League footballer has already been hospitalised for his laughing gas addiction

In February 2024 a Premier League star became the first footballer to go to rehab for laughing gas addiction.

The footballer was admitted to a medical centre after his family asked his club for help.

Richard Moriarty reported that "other addicted stars will follow, as sources warn that use is widespread among elite players despite it now being illegal".

For repeat users, prison sentences could be up to two years' imprisonment.

What is hippy crack (nitrous oxide or laughing gas): how it is consumed and the serious consequences of using it

Nitrous oxide, also known as 'hippy crack' or laughing gas, comes in canisters used to fill balloons, which are used to inhale the illegal gas.

The consumption of nitrous oxide provides a quick high, but carries the risk of heart attacks, strokes, permanent brain damage and even death.

Prolonged use of 'laughing gas' can also cause depression, memory loss, incontinence, hallucinations and nerve damage.

Nitrous oxide, also known as 'hippy crack' or laughing gas, is considered a Class C controlled drug and possession by inhalation is a criminal offence in Britain.
