Manchester City have rejected the proposal that Barça put on the table last night to try to acquire the services of Joao Cancelo and Bernardo Silva on loan in a joint operation.
Barça's sporting management are working to reinforce the positions that Xavi has identified as priorities and the two players from the Sky Blues are the ones that the coach likes most to shore up right-back and midfield. Cancelo is a specialist that the Blaugrana do not have at the moment and Bernardo Silva, a high-calibre player in the creative area.
Barcelona's finances do not allow for a transfer, even with the imminent departures of Franck Kessie and Ousmane Dembele. That is why the sporting directors have opted for an imaginative option in the form of a loan with a compulsory option to buy at the end of the season.
But City have remained firm in their decision not to negotiate any departure, especially that of Bernardo Silva. Not surprisingly, the English champions have not even contemplated the two proposals made to them this summer by PSG. The first one for 70 million and the second one raising the figure and offering a player to complete the operation.
City will not negotiate for Bernardo Silva unless the Portuguese midfielder expressly asks to leave. The Cancelo case has been stalled since the winter transfer window, when it seemed that the Portuguese full-back would join the Blaugrana but ended up joining Bayern.
