Diego Simeone's side will not even play the Europa League in the New Year

Atletico Madrid have been eliminated from Europe after losing 2-1 to Porto on Tuesday. 

Diego Simeone's side were knocked out of the Champions League last week but a point against Porto would have secured them a place in the Europa League in the New Year. 

However, the defeat, coupled with Bayer Leverkusen picking up a point at home to Club Brugge, means Atletico will have no European football at all in the second half of the season. 

Atletico were 2-0 down inside 24 minutes in Portugal with Mehdi Taremi and Stephen Eustaquio on target. 

The consolation arrived in the 94th minute when Ivan Marcano put through his own net. 

Atletico's European exit is even more painful given they were expected to navigate their way out of a group that was won by Porto, with Belgian side Brugge the surprise package progressing in second. 

Xavi Alonso's Leverkusen finish third and will enter the Europa League in 2023.
