Olympique Marseille have found an agreement in principle with Flamengo on a transfer of Gerson. In recent weeks, there had already been reports about the imminent transfer of the central midfielder. According to the report, the 24-year-old Brazilian will sign a five-year contract with the Ligue 1 club.

As a transfer fee, Globo Esporte most recently named around €25 million, which is about €5 million above his market value. L'Èquipe wrote of around €20 million to be paid by the future Europa League contender. Even with the lower sum, Gerson ranks fourth among the record departures in Flamengo's club history. Only Vinícius Júnior (to Real Madrid for €45 million), Lucas Paquetá (to AC Milan for €38.4 million) and Reinier (to Real Madrid for €30 million) have cost more. Flamengo also reportedly secured a resale stake of 20 to 25 percent.

For Gerson, who gained €6 million in Brazil's last market value update, Marseille is the third stop in Europe. In 2016, he had moved from Fluminense to AS Roma for €18.6 million but was unable to establish himself there. A loan to ACF Fiorentina followed two years later before he returned to his homeland. At Flamengo, he established himself as a key player in the team and played 98 games since 2019, in which he was directly involved in 16 goals. In 2019 and 2020, Gerson won the championship with the club. In 2019, he also won the Copa Libertadores.
