'It was the perfect response': Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp 'really happy' with 98th-minute winner after being frustrated with Newcastle's time-wasting tactics during fiery clash

  • Liverpool boss voiced his ire at the Bournemouth bench and fourth official
  • Newcastle went ahead through Isak's clinical strike in the first-half at Anfield
  • Firmino's equalised just after hour mark and Carvalho netted in stoppage time

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp felt Liverpool's 98th minute winner was the perfect way to secure victory after being frustrated by Newcastle's timewasting during Wednesday's emotionally-charged tussle at Anfield.

The German voiced his annoyance at the Bournemouth bench and the fourth official as his side toiled after going behind to Alexander Isak's clinical strike in the first-half on Wednesday night.

But Roberto Firmino's equaliser lifted the mood just after the hour mark and sub Fabio Carvalho netted the winner in stoppage time.

The goal sparked a melee on the touchline with the Newcastle bench feeling aggrieved as there should have only been five minutes of additional time.

Klopp told BT Sport: 'I think that we scored up in 90 plus eight (minutes) is the perfect response. To that to be honest. And I'm really happy about that,'

'It feels like this is the best way to win a football game -- to be honest, I don't need it every week, but if you can do it once or twice it's really good.

'I told the boys at halftime even before we went 1-0 down we looked a bit desperate in situations when we didn't play the extra pass. When we did that we were immediately really dangerous,' he said.

'We had to force ourselves to keep calm a little bit more and to keep going, and in the end we forced it.'

The goal came with the clock reading 97 minutes and nine seconds after only five minutes of stoppage time were shown and tempers frayed between the benches.

While Liverpool celebrated, it was a gutting end for Newcastle given how impressive they had been in frustrating the hosts on a night when record signing Isak had the visitors dreaming of a win.

The 22-year-old scored an emphatic first-half strike on his debut and saw the offside flag deny him another, but the Magpies still looked set to leave with a point as Liverpool toiled following Roberto Firmino's equaliser.

Carvalho sent Anfield wild by scrambling home a Liverpool winner and finally breaking Newcastle's resolve eight minutes into stoppage time.
