Liverpool's most famous ball boy has taken another step towards representing the Reds' first team by scoring a hat-trick against Ajax for the under-19s in the UEFA Youth League.

Oakley Cannonier stole the show as Liverpool's youngsters won 4-0 at the club's training ground in front of watching legend Sir Kenny Dalglish.

Cannonier was 15 years old in 2019 when he showed quick thinking to give the ball to Trent Alexander-Arnold as Liverpool searched for a winning goal against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final second leg at Anfield.

Trailing 3-0 from the first leg at the Nou Camp, Jurgen Klopp's side had pulled it back to 3-3 on aggregate thanks to Divock Origi and a double from Georginio Wijnaldum

With 11 minutes left, ball boy Cannonier - who had been briefed on how to catch Barcelona napping - swiftly threw Alexander-Arnold the ball to allow him to take a quick corner.

Seeing the Barcelona defence still getting organised, the full-back swung the corner across for Origi, who was free in the box to finish the chance and score the crucial goal which completed a remarkable comeback and sent Liverpool through.

Cannonier earned plenty of plaudits from pundits and fans - including Graeme Souness, who highlighted the teenager in his post-match analysis that night.

Now 18 years old, Cannonier is catching the eye on the field. The forward scored three times against Ajax on Tuesday afternoon, having also netted the winner against Napoli in the Reds' first UEFA Youth League game last week.

His performance whipped supporters into a frenzy on social media as many called for Cannonier to be handed a first team debut.

'Why isn't Klopp and the technical team looking in the direction of Oakley Cannonier,' one fan wrote.

'18 year old Oakley Cannonier with the hattrick,' another added. 'Need to give him some minutes in the cups this year imo. He deserves it.'

'Can't be too long until he gets a chance in the first team,' a third echoed.

Cannonier has been highly-rated by those at Liverpool for some time and made headlines earlier this year when he reached 41 goals last season in all competitions.

The England youth international joined the club as an under-12 from hometown club Leeds and in the summer he signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool.
