'It was nice to see him in a more advanced role': Michael Owen happy to see Curtis Jones on the wing for Liverpool... as Reds icon insists that he used to 'beat players, score goals and be a real attacking threat' in the academy

  •  Curtis Jones impressed Michael Owen playing in a more advanced role
  • The Liverpool player was used on the wing in their 2-0 win over Napoli
  • Jones used to play as an attacker during his time in the club's youth academy
  • But due to the success of the club's attacker he has been played in the midfield

Micheal Owen has admitted he enjoyed watching Curtis Jones in an advanced role for Liverpool during their victory against Napoli in the Champions League.

The midfielder has usually been deployed in a deeper role as part of the midfield three under manager Jurgen Klopp due to the potency of a front three consisting of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and now Bayern Munich forward Sadio Mane.

However, now Mane is no longer part of the Liverpool squad and with an injury to Diogo Jota, Jones got his chance back on the wing for the club against the Serie A table toppers.

During his time in the academy, Jones was played in an advanced role and was an excellent prospect and he even won the Premier League 2 Player of the Season in 2020.

Owen is happy that he was back in that position and he did well during Liverpool's win, but he was also able to help out defensively, a trait that he learned during his time playing as part of the midfield three.

He told BT Sports: 'I have seen him a lot coming through the academy, that has always been his position [on the wing].

During his time in Liverpool's academy Jones was impressive going forward

'Because Liverpool have always been so strong in those three positions over the last five years or whatever he has hardly got a look in the position he has grown up with and he has been shuffled back into the midfield, so it was nice to see him in a more advanced role.

'He used to beat players, score goals and be a real attacking threat. He uses pace but then I say he got into the team as more of a midfielder, so it was nice to see him in that position, and he did himself a lot of justice.'

Jones will hope to have another chance to play in his natural position in the Reds' next game which comes against Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday.
