'This result has been coming': Jamie Carragher claims Liverpool's emphatic defeat at Brentford was expected amid a run of poor performances, insisting Jurgen Klopp's men were 'lucky' in their last fightback win over Leicester
The Reds lost 3-1 on the road in London for their first Premier League outing of 2023, as an Ibrahima Konate own goal and goals from Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo sealed the result in favour of the Bees.
Former Liverpool defender Carragher said that based on the showings of Jurgen Klopp's squad in their recent games, including a 2-1 win over Leicester City aided by two own goals by Woet Faes, showed that it was only a matter of time before they dropped points.
Jamie Carragher compared Liverpool's midfield to that of Premier League race leaders Arsenal
Carragher told Sky Sports: 'This result has been coming. The last two performances from Liverpool, they were lucky at Leicester, they've been picking up results without playing well, and it feels like this result is going to come every three or four weeks.
'I don't see it changing before the end of the season. Once Liverpool's goal went in Brentford got back together and got back into that back five.'
The 44-year-old pundit also spoke out about the mistakes which led to Brentford's goals, particularly after a first-half performance which led Klopp to make three changes in the break.
He said: 'They do really well, Its in a dangerous area but it looks awful, it smacks of a goal that's weak. No one gets the header. Liverpool don't deal with it at the near post.
Jurgen Klopp's Reds remain 15 points behind Mikel Arteta's Gunners after the Brentford loss
'It's been going on for a year, they give themselves a mountain to climb. I can't fathom how players at this level, some of the best players in Europe, why does Allison then play a goalkick out to someone feet, then [Harvey] Elliott dummies it with the crowd up.
'You don't try and do that against a team that is up like that, you go long and slow the game down.'
The loss leaves Liverpool 15 points behind Premier League leaders Arsenal, despite finishing second last term, and winning the trophy in the 2019-20 campaign.
Their campaign has also been hit with Klopp's news post-match that their captain Virgil van Dijk was forced off at the Gtech Community Stadium with a hamstring issue.
