Ben Doak has been ruled out of Scotland's upcoming U21 fixtures after collapsing on the pitch during Liverpool's UEFA Youth League game last week.

The 17-year-old starlet clashed heads with one of the Sporting CP players on Tuesday afternoon when they both challenged for a high ball.

Doak managed to stay on his feet immediately after the knock but fell to the floor just moments later. As a result, the medical team rushed onto the pitch.

Doak appeared to be okay as he left the pitch just nine minutes into the game but he has been ruled out of Scotland's upcoming U21 fixtures.

According to the Herald, Doak will miss Scotland's friendlies against Sweden and Wales as a precaution due to the concussion protocol.

Instead of reporting for international duty, Doak will remain at Liverpool. He will 'rest and recover' before resuming training.

Doak and Scotland's U21 manager Scot Gemmill are said to be disappointed but understand the importance of the concussion protocol.

Speaking previously about Doak, Gemmill said: 'Ben influences games and, for me, not everyone can do that on a consistent level.

'I've not seen a game Ben has played where he hasn't affected the game. That's the real measure of young players, and that's not just with the ball – it can be out of possession as well.

'We are trying to work with players who can affect the game in and out of possession. And the transitions as well.

'It's brilliant to see a young player with the attitude and hunger to improve to play at the top level.

'We've been lucky in recent years to work with two examples who are with the first-team squad – Nathan Patterson and Billy Gilmour – players who are good technically but they have the attitude and hunger too.

'I'm confident we have more in the group. Ben is ahead of schedule but still there's a lot more to come and he will be really pushing to have more of an impact.'

The Scotland U21 star is one of Liverpool's most highly-rated prospects and has made five appearances for Jurgen Klopp's first team.

He joined the Reds from Celtic last year and is tipped for a big future on Merseyside.

Scotland manager Steve Clarke has faced calls to include Doak in a senior side, but made the decision to leave him out when his latest squad was named on Tuesday.
