Steven Gerrard scored a penalty for Liverpool Legends at Anfield - and the ex-Rangers boss was pelted with objects from the travelling Celtic fans.

Gerrard's penalty for the hosts opened the scoring in the charity match after 38 minutes, and he gleefully celebrated in front of the fans cheering on Celtic Legends.  

The travelling supporters made their feelings towards the former manager of their cross-city rivals known, by throwing items including bottles and coins in the direction of the celebrating Liverpool players. 

One fan even seemed to throw his green and white Celtic shirt in the direction of Gerrard after the goal was scored.  

Martin Skrtel was brought down by a Celtic Legends player in the penalty box after a smart move forward in the first half, and Gerrard, 42, stepped up to send Artur Boruc the wrong way from 12 yards out.

Gerrard made over 500 appearances for the Reds between 1998 and 2015, and during his managerial career, he was boss at Celtic's arch-rivals Rangers between 2018 and 2021.

During Gerrard's time in charge at Rangers, he led them to the Scottish Premiership title in 2021, ending years of dominance by Celtic.  

The 42-year-old Scouser returned to Anfield for Saturday afternoon's charity match, and was more than happy to celebrate his goal in front of the visiting Hoops fans. 

Nobody seemed to take offence at the objects thrown onto the pitch, which were quickly dealt with by the players and security at Anfield.  

Liverpool Legends went 2-0 up shortly after the break against Celtic Legends when Chilean Mark Gonzalez doubled the hosts' advantage at Anfield, and that was how the result remained.

The LFC Foundation charity match was played to raise funds for the foundationand its partner charities, funding programmes across schools, inclusive sports, social action, health, wellbeing, and food poverty. 

Sir Kenny Dalglish oversaw the Liverpool squad, which also saw the return of players like Dirk Kuyt, Gary McAllister and Martin Skrtel.

Celtic's own line-up was managed by Paul Lambert and captained by Stiliyan Petrov. It also included Niall McGinn, Robbie Keane, and Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink.
