I was lucky to wear some fantastic shirts during my career — an England one at a World Cup, a Liverpool one in an FA Cup final, an all-white classic for Tottenham.
The one that was my favourite above all others, though, will surprise you: Portsmouth away, 2008-09. Yes, it may sound a little obscure but it was a beauty — all black with gold trim.
The first time I wore it, I scored — a header against Everton at Goodison Park in a 3-0 win, my first goal after I’d rejoined Pompey from Liverpool.
One thing I remember most, it was made by a manufacturer called Canterbury, who used to provide kit for a lot of rugby teams.
The bonus, personally, was that they knew how to kit out tall sportsmen, so their tracksuits and kits always fitted me perfectly.
