Jamie Carragher reignited his feud with Rio Ferdinand by labelling the Man United legend a ‘poor man’s Virgil van Dijk’.

The former Reds defender aimed a fresh dig as he watched highlights of Liverpool's 4-1 victory over Luton on Wednesday night.

Van Dijk sparked the comeback win after powering a header into the back of the net from a corner, much to the delight of Carragher, who was working on CBS’ Champions League coverage.

Pundit Micah Richards asked Carragher for his view of Van Dijk's goal.

‘You don’t need to analyse that,’ Carragher said on Richards’ Instagram story.

‘Look at the colossus, look at him, look at him! A marvel of modern science.

‘He is the best centre-back the Premier League has ever seen, by a mile.’

Richards then asked how Van Dijk compared to other legendary centre-backs like Carragher, John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Sol Campbell and Tony Adams.

‘JT could play alongside him, I would allow that,’ Carragher replied, before adding that Ferdinand was a: ‘Poor man’s Van Dijk.’

Last May Carragher said he was 'happy to call him a clown' while covering the Champions League semi-final with CBS.

The Liverpool hero and the Manchester United legend have clashed before on social media and Carragher stoked the fires once again by criticizing Ferdinand's opinion on a penalty call during Inter Milan's 2-0 win over rivals AC.

Lautaro Martínez went down inside the AC Milan box following a tussle with Simon Kjaer. Referee Jesus Gil Manzano immediately pointed to the spot and booked the defender but overturned his call after VAR asked him to consult his monitor.

A few months later, the pair then exchanged verbal blows over Saudi Arabia's involvement in football.

The investment of the Saudi state into football clubs and players has been a significant talking point among talking heads in the game.

The latest updates include Man City's Bernardo Silva being reportedly offered a mammoth pay offer by Al-Hilal, and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard being confirmed as the new manager of Al-Ettifaq.

Ferdinand took a swipe at Carragher - himself a former Liverpool man who was close with Gerrard - during his FIVE programming, which was shared on Twitter.

Rio said: 'Jamie. Jamie Carragher. Where are you man? I heard a lot of talk, a lot of negativity about Saudi. Oh, Bernardo Silva, I can't believe it. It's a disgrace, it needs investigating, this league, et cetera.

'Steven Gerrard's gone. You used to carry his boots and his bag at Anfield to games. Your boy's gone over there and I've not heard a peep out of you. I've not heard how disappointed you are. I want to see him say "I can't believe Stevie's gone there".

However, Carragher was not best pleased with Ferdinand's personalised attack - and accused the former Man United and England defender of hypocrisy for ducking questions over Qatar during the 2022 World Cup.
