Alan Shearer has slammed Nottingham Forest for their 'embarrassing' statement following their 2-0 defeat to Everton.

Forest issued an extraordinary message on social media following their loss on Merseyside, in which they blasted 'extremely poor decisions' regarding penalties that were not given in their favour.

They also claimed that they had warned PGMOL that VAR official Stuart Attwell was a Luton Town fan, and said they would 'consider' their options.

Speaking on the Rest is Football Podcast, Premier League icon Shearer was left stunned by the decision to release the statement on social media after the game.

He told co-hosts Gary Lineker and Micah Richards: 'It's a good job we're not on the BBC here, but what the f*** are Nottingham Forest doing putting that statement out?'

His expletive comments left Richards and Lineker in barrels of laughter, before he went on to add: 'It's an absolute embarrassment.'

''We told the PGMOL that he's a Luton fan,' I mean, what on earth are they thinking about? It's embarrassing.

'I thought Anthony Taylor and the VAR had a terrible afternoon but you can't behave like that if you're a professional football club, one of the top, a team that has been amazing over the years yet behaving like that, there's no class to it, no matter how angry you are.

'You cannot be putting statements like that. Forest have been hard done by this season and the standard of refereeing is nowhere near good enough.'

Ashley Young was at the centre of the appeals as he appeared to kick Giovanni Reyna in the box, before the ball struck his hand in the first-half.

Callum Hudson-Odoi was brought down in the second-half from Young as he looked to race through on goal, but no action was taken against the Everton player.

Forest in their statement said: 'Three extremely poor decisions - three penalties not given - which we simply cannot accept.

'We warned the PGMOL that the VAR is a Luton fan before the game but they didn’t change him. Our patience has been tested multiple times. NFFC will now consider its options.'

Meanwhile Forest's match and performance analyst, Mark Clattenburg told Mail Sport: 'You will have seen the statement released by the club — how the PGMOL were contacted to warn that it was not appropriate for a Luton fan such as Attwell to play such a pivotal role in a massive match that would impact the relegation race.

'Certainly, I would not have risked this situation if I were the head of the referees and all of this could have been avoided had the PGMOL simply made smarter appointments.

'Referees do not make mistakes deliberately but this was mind-boggling to watch. Why Attwell did not send Taylor to his screen, only he will know.'

The Football Association have ‘formally requested observations’ from Nottingham Forest – and Mark Clattenburg – following the explosive row over three penalties that were not given during their crunch clash at Everton.

Mail Sport understands a hefty fine, rather than a points deduction, may be in the pipeline.

PGMOL chief Howard Webb told Nottingham Forest he would not remove Attwell from duty at Everton after he was made aware of the VAR's Luton Town allegiance, Mail Sport also understands.

Forest in a further statement have requested for the audio to be released into the public domain.

They said: 'The club has requested this be shared for three key match incidents - Ashley Young’s challenge on Giovanni Reyna (24th minute), Ashley Young’s handball (44th minute) and Ashley Young’s challenge on Callum Hudson-Odoi (56th minute).

'We firmly advocate for the broader football community and supporters to have access to the audio and transcript for full transparency, ensuring the integrity of our sport is upheld.'

Forest make their request with the hope of access the transcripts in the same manner as Liverpool did after their controversial defeat to Tottenham in September.
