A group of 'overzealous' police officers have been called out for stopping and confronting a man for jaywalking in the middle of the day.

Three cops were filmed stepping out of an unmarked police car in Liverpool, Sydney, on May 4, to confront the pedestrian.

Initially, the jaywalker recorded himself as he walked away, but the officers were able to catch up to him, and the situation intensified.

He was then confronted by one of the officers, who said: 'You've just jaywalked, remove your identification please, put your phone down.'

The man shared footage of his interaction with the police officers, triggering an intense reaction online.

Another simply called the police officers 'overzealous'.

In New South Wales, jaywalking became illegal a decade ago under Regulation 231 of the NSW Road Rules 2014.

According to this regulation, people are only permitted to begin crossing at pedestrian lights when the light is green.

Anyone walking against a flashing red signal or crossing within 20 meters of a marked crossing can receive fines ranging from $75 to $220.

If contested in court and unsuccessful, these fines can escalate up to $2,200, as reported by Armstrong Legal.
