Roy Hodgson once bizarrely sold the wrong player when he was manager of Liverpool.

Hodgson's spell in charge of the Reds certainly didn't go to plan - he was appointed in July 2010 and departed in January 2011.

One particular incident perhaps epitomises Hodgson's time at the club as he let the wrong player join Fulham as part of the deal that saw Paul Konchesky head to Anfield.

Konchesky ended up making just 18 appearances for Liverpool and was loaned out to Nottingham Forest in January 2011.

Hodgson certainly won't want to be reminded of his transfer mistake.

In the closing stages of the summer 2010 transfer window, Liverpool agreed to let youngsters Lauri Dalla Valle and Alex Kacaniklic leave as part of the deal for Konchesky along with a fee of £3.5million.

However, it later emerged that Hodgson didn't actually want Kacaniklic to leave and had instead wanted to sell another player named Alex.

Hodgson realised his error but by then it was too late, with Kacaniklic having already made up his mind about joining Fulham.

Kacaniklic told fotbolskananelen in a podcast: 'It was a bit difficult for Liverpool to replace me, but when I was in Fulham and before I signed up, I had a conversation with Roy Hodgson on the phone, where we found out that he had chosen the wrong Alex.

'In his head, he thought he had sold another Alex for Konchesky. But then it was too late. It's a little fun!

'Then he just told me I was welcome back in Liverpool with open arms, but that I could do what I felt. By then I had already made my mind up and was very excited about coming to Fulham.'

Now aged 32, Kacaniklic is currently playing for AEL Limassol in Cyprus.

While at Liverpool the winger made an impact at youth level but didn't feature for the first-team.

He made 100 appearances for Fulham (47 of which came in the Premier League), and scored eleven goals in all competitions.

During his time at Fulham Kacaniklic had loan spells at Watford, Burnley and Copenhagen.

A move to Nantes followed in 2016 and he later played for Hammarby and Hajduk Split prior to signing for AEL Limassol in 2022.

On the international stage Kacaniklic scored three goals in 21 games for Sweden between 2012 and 2020.
