Newcastle are reportedly concerned that Anthony Gordon's head has been turned by speculation surrounding a potential move to Liverpool and have set a plan in place for his return.

Mail Sport reported earlier this week that Newcastle had been ready to let the winger leave as they are forced to sell this summer in order to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules.

Discussions were held surrounding a deal that would have seen Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah head in the opposite direction but talks ultimately broke down with Newcastle feeling their Premier League rivals had been opportunistic.

Liverpool may have proceeded had the terms been different, but did not want to lose Quansah and felt like they have sufficient depth in wide areas.

However, according to a report from The Telegraph, Gordon briefly thought the deal would be completed and was extremely keen on a move to his boyhood club.

As such, Newcastle are said to be preparing a plan to show the 23-year-old their appreciation for him on his return from the European Championships whilst encouraging supporters to do the same.

After spending a decade with Everton, in January 2023 Gordon handed in a formal transfer request and refused to train under then-Toffees boss Frank Lampard in order to secure a move to St James' Park.

The pressure paid off for Gordon as he completed a £45million move that month.

Since then the winger has become a fan favourite on Tyneside and was named the club's player of the season for the 2023-24 campaign.

Gordon hit doubles figures in the Premier League last season for the first time in his career, and finished the campaign as the Magpies' second-highest goalscorer in all competitions.

His form also earned him a call up to the England senior team for the first time, and he made his international debut in a friendly defeat to Brazil at Wembley in March.

Gordon also made the cut for Gareth Southgate's 26-man England squad for Euro 2024.

However, despite Phil Foden - and England's attacking players in general - faltering thus far in Germany, Gordon has been limited to just one cameo appearance, coming off the bench in the closing stages of a 0-0 draw with Slovenia.
