  • The Liverpool captain said he will consider what he wants at club level

Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk has admitted he will consider his future at club and international level after the Netherlands' Euro 2024 semi-final defeat.

Van Dijk made the statement after the Netherlands suffered a 2-1 defeat to England in the Euro 2024 semi-finals, with Ollie Watkins late strike earning the Three Lions a place in the final.

The 33-year-old, who captains both Liverpool and the Dutch national team, revealed he will decide on his future during his summer break.

'I haven't the slightest idea right now,' Van Dijk said, as reported by Reuters.

'I will think carefully this summer about what I want at club level and as an international player. Then we'll go for it again, but first recover from this.

'After a season like this, where all kinds of things have happened, it gets emotional at the end because you know it's over.'

Van Dijk is entering the final year of his contract at Liverpool, with the club starting a new era under head coach Arne Slot.

The Liverpool star had alarmed fans in January by appearing to raise doubt over his future following Jurgen Klopp's shock announcement he would leave the club.

'The club will have a big job on their hands, that is well known,' Van Dijk said in January.

'To replace not only the manager but the whole staff, there are so many things that will change. I'm very curious which direction that will go in but when that will be announced we will see our situation. I can't say much about it.

'We will see at the end of the season, hopefully we will have the success we all dream of and by then probably there will be more clarification about what the club wants for the future and then we will see.'

He later claimed his comments had been taken 'out of context'.

Van Dijk made 48 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool last season, with the centre back having been made club captain after the departure of Jordan Henderson.

The 33-year-old has also been the Netherlands captain since 2018 and has made 74 appearances for his nation.

Van Dijk had hit out at referee Felix Zwayer after the Netherlands' loss to England, with the Dutch angered by the decision to award the Three Lions a first half penalty.

'I don't know if I should say something about that,' he told Bein Sports. 'I said it to the Dutch media. I think it says it all that the referee went in quite quickly after the game.

'I had no time to shake his hand. But it is what it is, the game is done, we lost, certain moments were obvious that they should have gone our way, but they didn't, whatever the outcome.

'It is difficult to accept this. It has been a tough year. We had a big dream and we felt we could have achieved it.

'They keep changing certain things, small changes that could have a big impact. Maybe it's a good thing that they could be held accountable as well.

'They didn't come here and speak to you and explain themselves like we have to when we do something wrong.

'That might be something. But I shouldn't speak about others and we have to look at ourselves.'
