With the start of the new Premier League season just days away, supporters up and down the country are gearing up for yet another thrilling campaign.

In particular, Liverpool fans will be curious to see what the 2024-25 season holds in store for them as Arne Slot prepares for his first campaign in the Anfield dugout.

The Dutchman took over from Jurgen Klopp after the German's departure last season and will be keen to make a big impression on the Liverpool fans early on.

After a promising pre-season campaign for the Reds, there's much to be excited about - but there are still some question marks that remain.

Here, Mail Sport's LEWIS STEELE answers your pressing questions about Liverpool.

How quickly will the players get used to the system and will there be a post-Klopp drop off?

You cannot judge too much from pre-season but, based on the three-stop tour of the United States, players are loving Arne Slot’s system. Midfielder Curtis Jones said playing under the new regime was ‘the happiest I’ve ever been’.

The Scouser added that he felt Liverpool played ‘too fast’ in the past – but Slot’s style is more possession-based, with the Dutchman raised in the Johan Cruyff school of thought. He idolises Pep Guardiola and told his team to ‘kill them with passes’ in Philadelphia.

So while Jurgen Klopp is a huge act to follow, it feels like Slot has the necessary tools to prevent a drop-off. It will not all click overnight but, even without several star men on the tour, Liverpool looked like a slick outfit with a solid defensive foundation.

Can Slot get the best out of Nunez?

If Darwin Nunez was a Netflix documentary, it would be fair to describe him as a slow-burner with some unmissable episodes and other less-engaging ones. But the Uruguayan is never too far away from the drama and has been commissioned for a third series.

After two inconsistent years at Anfield, the time is now for the £85million man to kick on. Liverpool have put their faith in him and Slot spent time on the phone with Nunez when he was away on Copa America duty, telling the striker he was central to the plans.

When hiring Slot, Liverpool noted his tendency to improve attackers. An appropriate case study is Santiago Gimenez. Signed from Cruz Azul, the striker managed eight goals in 42 games in his last season in Mexico but netted 49 in 86 under Slot at Feyenoord.

Nunez has benefited from a summer working under visionary manager Marcelo Bielsa for Uruguay – he made headlines for a provoked fracas with Colombia fans – and Slot could be the man to unlock his true potential. But first he must get the shirt back from Diogo Jota.

Can they solve the No6 puzzle after a year of trying?

Let's talk about No6, baby. The lack of a quality defensive midfielder has haunted Liverpool for two years now, after Fabinho’s level declined in 2022-23. The Brazilian left alongside Jordan Henderson last year and the pair were never adequately replaced. Thiago has also departed.

Part-time sporting director Jorg Schmadtke missed out on top targets Romeo Lavia and Moises Caicedo last summer – both went to Chelsea – and ended up signing Japan captain Wataru Endo, now 31, for £16.2million from Stuttgart.

Endo had strong references – Klopp received a text from former Borussia Dortmund captain Mats Hummels persuading him to push forward – but his age and lack of mobility has seen him fall into the unfancied category with new boss Slot.

For Liverpool to win the Premier League, they need a holding midfielder in the mould of Rodri or Declan Rice. They had identified Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, who starred in the European Championship final for Spain, but the 25-year-old has decided to stay put at Real Sociedad.

Alexis Mac Allister is the main midfielder but Curtis Jones, Ryan Gravenberch and even attack-minded Dominik Szoboszlai have filled in during pre-season. Trent Alexander-Arnold can play there, too. But it feels like this is a glaring area in need of improvement if Slot and Co are to achieve their goals this term - though that now looks unlikely after missing out on their top target.

What’s going on with contracts?

No news is good news as far as Trent Alexander-Arnold is confirmed, with Real Madrid cooling their interest in signing him. But the vice-captain’s future does still remain up in the air with him yet to commit to a new deal.

Alexander-Arnold, alongside star forward Mohamed Salah and captain Virgil van Dijk, will not be Liverpool players this time next year as it stands. So new sporting director Richard Hughes has a busy few months ahead if he is to convince them to stay.

None of the three are pushing for an exit but the uncertainty is a worrying factor that is looming over the club. Van Dijk, 33, and Salah, 32, are not getting any younger and are both on big money. But both are still playing at a top level and it would be wrong to let them go just yet.

Local lad Alexander-Arnold, on the other hand, is in the prime of his career and it would be fair to ask: how have Liverpool allowed a prized asset to get so close to the end of his contract? He has recently returned from a summer holiday with Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham.

Any surprise figures pushing for regular starts?

This time a year ago, Jarell Quansah was yet to play for the first team in a competitive match. He made his debut off the bench at Newcastle – when Van Dijk had been sent off – and has barely put a foot wrong since.

Apart from a costly error against Manchester United, when he passed straight to goalscorer Bruno Fernandes, Quansah’s rise has been meteoric. Speaking to Mail Sport in Philadelphia a fortnight ago, he said he has no imposter syndrome and believes he belongs at this top level.

Now Quansah is making a strong case to be the starting centre back alongside his idol Van Dijk, who he has spent hours studying and requested drone footage of the Dutchman to help his positional game. Ibrahima Konate will not like that and the pair will battle for the shirt.

Another fringe player in contention for regular minutes is Harvey Elliott, the super-sub extraordinaire last season.

The 21-year-old also spoke to Mail Sport in the US and said he is ready to be a leader. He was perhaps the standout player of the three-game American tour.
