A failed politician, a horse racing owner and only one current manager: 23 years on from England's 5-1 win over Germany and Sven Goran Eriksson's greatest Three Lions hour, where are they now?

On September 1 in 2001, led by the late Sven-Goran Eriksson, the England men's national team enjoyed one of their greatest ever nights.

After losing on penalties to Germany at both Italia '90 and Euro '96, England travelled to Munich to face their old rivals again, this time in a World Cup qualifier.

Germany were the clear group leaders, having beaten England 1-0 in the last ever game before the demolition of the old Wembley Stadium 11 months earlier.

Carsten Jancker then gave Germany an early lead in Munich, but England hit back spectacularly to win 5-1 thanks to a Michael Owen hat-trick, plus goals from fellow Liverpool stars Steven Gerrard and Emile Heskey.

England's star-studded team that night also included the likes of David Seaman, Ashley Cole, Paul Scholes and captain David Beckham. But where are they all now, 23 years on?

David Seaman

David Seaman made his 75th and last England appearance in October 2002 in a 2-2 draw against Macedonia. He then retired from playing altogether in January 2004 due to a recurring shoulder injury.

However, that injury did not prevent him from competing on - and winning - BBC show 'Strictly Ice Dancing' later in 2004.

Since then, Seaman, now 60, has been coaching young goalkeepers in the Arsenal academy one day a week.

Gary Neville

Manchester United icon Gary Neville is arguably just as well known by today's generation of football followers as he was during his 85-game England career.

That is because the 49-year-old has become one of the most familiar faces in the world of football broadcasting.

The Sky Sports and ITV pundit, who also hosts The Overlap podcast, dabbled in management before deciding to stick to TV work. He was in charge of Valencia for 28 games between December 2015 and March 2016.

His results as Valencia boss were certainly not good, but also not quite as bad as people often think. He oversaw 10 wins, seven draws and 11 losses. One of those losses was famously a 7-0 defeat by Barcelona.

As well as being a pundit nowadays, Neville has many business interests, including two hotels. He is also part of Project 92 Limited, the ownership group in charge of League Two club Salford City.

Rio Ferdinand

Like Neville, Rio Ferdinand is now best known for his punditry. The former West Ham, Leeds and Man United centre back is a regular on TNT Sports.

He also runs 'Rio Ferdinand Presents' on YouTube where he has more than a million subscribers.

He tried to become a professional boxer in 2017 but that dream ended the following year when the British Board of Control rejected his application for a license.

Away from sport, Ferdinand and a business partner opened an Italian restaurant called 'Rosso' in Manchester in 2009. Although popular for many years, it stopped serving last year.

Sol Campbell

Sol Campbell called time on his playing career in 2012, a year after leaving Newcastle United as a free agent.

Since then, the former Spurs and Arsenal centre back has managed Macclesfield Town and Southend United, with a win-rate of 22.6% across those two spells.

However, Campbell - who has suggested that racism prevented him from being given an opportunity to manage a team higher up in England's football pyramid - said in November last year that he was no longer applying for jobs.

Campbell has also attempted to get into politics and declared in 2015 that he wanted to become the Mayor of London, but he failed to make the 2016 shortlist of candidates.

Ashley Cole

Widely considered to be one of the best left back's of his generation, Ashley Cole has stuck with football following the end of his playing career in 2019.

The former Arsenal, Chelsea, Roma, LA Galaxy and Derby defender, was recently confirmed as an assistant to new England interim manager Lee Carsley.

Cole, 43, will juggle his England role alongside his work as a coach for Birmingham City.

He has also previously held coaching positions at Derby, Chelsea and Everton.

David Beckham

By far the most famous member of England's class of 2001, David Beckham is still involved in elite football.

The 49-year-old former Man United and Real Madrid midfielder is the president and co-owner of Inter Miami and played a key role in bringing Lionel Messi to the Major League Soccer club in July 2023.

Beckham is also a co-owner of Salford City, along with Neville - who was his best man when he married 'Posh Spice', then Victoria Adams, in 1999.

Still married a quarter of a century on, 'Posh and Becks' now share four children.

Steven Gerrard

After spending nearly all of his playing career at boyhood club Liverpool - aside from a 16-month stint at LA Galaxy in his twilight years - Steven Gerrard and his family now live over 3,000 miles away in Bahrain.

Gerrard - who scored the first of his 21 international goals in England's 5-1 win over Germany in 2001 - is currently working as the manager of Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq.

The former Reds captain started his managerial career with Rangers in 2018 and his side won the 2020-21 edition of the Scottish Premiership without losing a single game.

Gerrard later lasted just under 12 months as Aston Villa boss between November 2021 and October 2022.

Paul Scholes

Paul Scholes is another member of the ownership team at Salford City.

He generally keeps a lower profile than former England and Man United team-mates Neville and Beckham, although he is not shy in giving his opinion on football matters in his role as a regular pundit on TNT Sports.

Scholes briefly worked as a coach at Man United following his retirement from playing in 2013.

He has also had two spells as interim manager at Salford, plus a seven-game stint in charge of Oldham in 2019.

Nick Barmby

Nick Barmby is probably the one player most fans will forget when trying to remember who started for England in Munich 23 years ago.

The former Tottenham, Middlesbrough, Everton, Liverpool and Leeds winger has largely disappeared from the public eye since he was the manager of Hull from November 2011 to May 2012.

Barmby - who was inducted into Hull City's Hall of Fame in December, having made nearly 200 appearances for the club as a player - also spent six weeks on the coaching staff at Scunthorpe United in 2019.

Emile Heskey

Emile Heskey is currently working as the head of football development for Leicester City Women.

Earlier this year, the former Leicester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Wigan, Aston Villa and Bolton forward was ordered to pay £194,794.42 plus interest in legal fees following a legal battle with HM Revenue and Customs that began back in 2017.

HMRC took action against Heskey over unpaid taxes and a trial had been scheduled for November 2019 until the ex-footballer accepted liability.

Heskey - whose goal against Germany in 2001 was one of seven strikes for England in 62 international appearances, retired from football after the 2015-16 season.

Michael Owen

Former boy wonder Michael Owen, who won the Ballon d'Or in 2001 just four days after his 22nd birthday, was England's main man on that night in Munich.

Including those three goals against Germany, Owen scored 40 times in 89 appearances during his senior international career.

Meanwhile, his club career took him from Liverpool to Stoke, via Real Madrid, Newcastle and Man United.

Since retiring in 2013, Owen has become a well known face within the sport of horse racing as a breeder and owner.

Owen set up the Manor House Stables in Malpas and one of his horses, Zoffee, won the Chester Cup, a £170,000 handicap race, in May.

As well as his involvement in the horse racing world, Owen is still a familiar face for football fans thanks to his appearances as a pundit on TNT Sports.
