Ruthless Liverpool silence doubters, time's running out for Gerrard at Aston Villa, United start to make progress and Gordon proves his £60m worth... 10 THINGS WE LEARNED in the Premier League

The Premier League campaign is in full swing after the fourth week of action saw a goal-heavy weekend with 30 goals scored across the 10 fixtures.

The headline news saw Liverpool demolish Bournemouth 9-0 as the Reds equalled the biggest victory in Premier League history.

Elsewhere, the table is beginning to take shape with hard fought wins for Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham, while Brighton and Newcastle United remain the only other two unbeaten teams.

Manchester United and Chelsea were also victorious after tricky starts to the campaign, while the pressure was heaped on Steven Gerrard after another defeat for Aston Villa.

Everton, Wolves and Leicester City meanwhile remain winless and in urgent need of points.

Here, Sportsmail dissects the key talking points from another gripping weekend of action in the Premier League.

United show signs of progress

What a difference two weeks makes for Manchester United. Off the back of a disastrous 4-0 defeat to Brentford, the Red Devils were at rock bottom.

But following a brilliant win over Liverpool and Saturday's battling victory at Southampton, things are looking up for Erik ten Hag.

Coupled with the £70million arrival of five-time Champions League winner Casemiro and the impending signing of Ajax star Antony for £84m, the mood around United has been lifted.

Bruno Fernandes's second half volley was enough for Manchester United to win on Saturday

It was a battling display from United as they secured their first clean sheet of the season

Against Southampton, they looked dangerous going forward with Bruno Fernandes showing signs of being back to his best with a well-taken volley.

But perhaps the most pleasing thing of all for Ten Hag was the commitment, resilience and work rate his team showed in defending their lead in the face of late pressure from the hosts with Lisandro Martinez excelling and David De Gea making a fine save late on.

There is still plenty to work on, but United will take a win and a clean sheet as they look to bounce back from the crisis that threatened to consume the club only a few weeks back.

Gordon demonstrates why Tuchel values him at £60m

The speculation surrounding Chelsea being linked with a £60m move for Everton starlet Anthony Gordon has raised eyebrows in the past week, with many questioning why Thomas Tuchel would spend so much on someone with just four goals and two assists last season.

Anthony Gordon has been linked with a £60m move to Chelsea this summer

At Brentford on Saturday, the winger led from the front to demonstrate why there has been such noise over his future, as he opened the scoring for Everton with a superb slotted finish past David Raya.

Gordon's pace and skill, along with his fearless nature to attack and take-on defenders shows why Frank Lampard is desperate to keep the 21-year-old at Goodison Park.

His ability to step up amid the transfer speculation demonstrates someone with a strong mentality and there is no wonder he is a fan favourite for the Toffees, who came away with an important point against the Bees.

Everton defender James Tarkowski hailed Gordon and his personality afterwards. He said: 'Anthony has been different class.

'All the paper talk and all the speculation, to be fair he just cracks on. Whatever comes will happen, but I love having him on my team. There is a reason why teams are after him.'

Liverpool answer the critics

Last Monday's dismal 2-1 defeat to Manchester United encapsulated a poor start to the season for Liverpool as the Reds were ravaged by injuries and remained winless.

Jurgen Klopp's side were under pressure ahead of Bournemouth's visit to Anfield but couldn't have answered the questions thrown at them in any better fashion.

The Reds were at their dominant and destructive best against the Cherries as they ruthlessly took apart their visitors.

Liverpool equaled the record margin for a Premier League win with Saturday's 9-0 win

Roberto Firmino rolled back the years and excelled, scoring twice and adding three assists

The Reds were 5-0 up at half-time but were relentless as they almost scored 10 goals

Liverpool kept going despite being 5-0 up at half-time and showed all their quality as they equalled the biggest victory in Premier League history.

All the more remarkable was the fact the record win came without a Mohamed Salah contribution as Roberto Firmino rolled back the years with two goals and three assists.

And with Klopp confirming a new midfielder would be coming in after he changed his stance on the matter, there are plenty of reasons to be positive after Saturday's thrashing, which also saw talented young midfielders Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho net their first Premier League goals.

Sterling steps up to the mark

After last week's embarrassing 3-0 defeat to Leeds, a hard fought 2-1 win over Leicester was much needed for Thomas Tuchel.

And the German had £50m signing Raheem Sterling to thank after the England star stepped up with his first two goals for the club to guide 10-man Chelsea to victory.

The Blues have lacked clinicality in their first three games so Sterling's well-taken finishes, with his second reminiscent of the many back-post tap-ins he scored for Man City, were most welcome.

With four Premier League titles and 111 goals in 324 league appearances, Sterling's quality and experience will be key for Tuchel this season, especially in the absence of a proper No 9.

The England international will be relieved to get off the mark for his new club and Tuchel was pleased with Sterling's impact.

The Chelsea boss said: 'The goals were crucial because they gave us belief and the boost that it was possible. They were responsible for the win.

'It was needed. We need him to score, it's what he does and he will score. I could feel he wasn't happy - he wants to score more and have more chances.'

Spurs show the mentality to ride the tough moments

The City Ground will not be an easy place to visit this season as demonstrated by Sunday's pulsating clash between Spurs and Nottingham Forest.

Steve Cooper's side were impressive as they imposed their direct and aggressive style on the visitors, and their plethora of attacking options are likely to cause problems for opponents.

But Spurs hung in there after Harry Kane's early strike and had to show a strong mentality to ride huge swathes of pressure.

They rode their luck at times but they held it together before Kane added a second late on with their squad depth coming to the fore as Ryan Sessegnon and Richarlison impressed after being introduced at 1-0.

Harry Kane scored twice against Nottingham Forest as Spurs battled to a 2-0 victory

Spurs are now showing a new sharp and ruthless side to their play under Antonio Conte after they bounced back from Kane missing a penalty.

The Italian hailed this new found element of his team after the win. He said: 'For us, to come here and get three points, we didn't have many chances, we missed a penalty. It's a good shape for our team. In the past, people said Tottenham would lose this kind of game.

'For sure, we are working on this aspect (mentality). The mental aspect is very important, if you are strong mentally, you are a survivor in this situation. If you are not, you will suffer.'

Silva proves he's indispensable to Guardiola

Bernardo Silva's summer has been dominated with speculation linking him with a move to Barcelona and then PSG, with City reportedly happy to let him leave if they receive an offer that meets their asking price.

Pep Guardiola labelled Bernardo Silva as 'irreplaceable' after the Portuguese playmaker starred in Saturday's win

However, the Portuguese playmaker showed on Saturday why Pep Guardiola cannot afford to let him go at any price.

After coming back from 2-0 down to win 4-2 against Crystal Palace, Erling Haaland rightfully received the plaudits for a superb 19 minute hat-trick.

But it was Silva who drove the comeback, with his running and invention outlining why he was the best player on the pitch in a brilliant all-round display.

He dragged City back into the contest with a deflected goal as he again showed his ability to step up in the key moments.

Guardiola was fully aware of Silva's impact. After the game he said: 'What amazes me about Bernardo is that when the game is going wrong he makes a step forward, he loves to play in this situation. He's comfortable with it.

'Some players maybe step backward and he makes a step forward. That's why he is irreplaceable in many ways for us…

'He's so important for us, he can play in four or five positions. And it's not just on the pitch, it's off it too. In the locker room, I want him here so much.'

The Emirates is becoming a fortress

Saturday evening's 2-1 win over Fulham wasn't easy for Arsenal as they had to fight back from a goal down against their impressive and resilient opponents.

However, it was another key development for Mikel Arteta's burgeoning young team as they maintained their perfect start to the campaign.

It also continued their impressive home form and they've now won seven out of their last nine games at the Emirates and five in a row.

This has encapsulated the relentless positivity around the club, with the atmosphere at Arsenal's home ground improving all the time and demonstrating the feel-good factor as they look to make the Emirates a fortress yet again.

Mikel Arteta's side were tested on Saturday but managed to overcome a resilient Fulham side

With Tottenham, Liverpool and Man City all visiting in the coming weeks, this will of course be tested but Arteta was full of praise for the Gunners' faithful after the win over the Cottagers.

He said: 'The support we're receiving in the stadium at the moment makes things much easier.

'I saw someone here today at the stadium that I love. They haven't been here for two years until today. They said it was the best they've seen the atmosphere here since Arsenal played at Highbury.'

Time is running out for Gerrard

Aston Villa have continued to back Steven Gerrard in the market this summer with additions including Sevilla centre-back Diego Carlos for £26m and Philippe Coutinho for £17m.

Despite the heavy investment, we are yet to see the results on the pitch and the pressure was ramped up further on the Liverpool legend with Sunday's drab 1-0 defeat at home to West Ham.

Villa's starting XI and subs used during the game cost £247m but they now have just three wins from their past 15 league games.

With Arsenal and Man City up next, it is not going to get any easier for Gerrard and he is now at real risk of becoming the first managerial casualty of the season.

Gerrard remained resolute at full-time and reiterated his commitment to turning Villa's poor start around.

He said: 'Our return hasn't been enough, I'm aware of that and in terms of moving forward we have got a choice.

'We either feel sorry for ourselves and it continues or we roll our sleeves up, stick together and try to put it right. I need to lead that and that is what I'll try to do.'

Saint-Maximin shows his quality

Just as it looked as if Wolves were going to get their first win of the season, Allan Saint-Maximin had other ideas.

The Frenchman rifled in an absurd 90th minute volley to ensure the spoils were shared at Molineux and highlighted the sheer quality he possesses.

There has never been any doubt about Saint-Maximin's talents, with winger dazzling on his day, but there have been question marks about his consistency and lack of end product.

Newcastle remain unbeaten in their first four league games for the first time since 2012

But as Eddie Howe leads Newcastle into a new era, we may be starting to see Saint-Maximin's class.

He now has one goal and three assists in the last two weeks after the Magpies boss challenged the Frenchman to 'bring it' every week following his superb display against Man City.

Saint-Maximin is well on his way to beating his tally of five goals and five assists from last season.

With the arrival of Alexander Isak, this will only improve the winger's output as his final minute screamer ensured Newcastle remained unbeaten in their first four games for the first time since 2012.

Gross excels in a more advanced role

Brighton continue to be the feel-good story of the season so far as they remain unbeaten despite losing their best two players from last year in Marc Cucurella and Yves Bissouma.

They were superb on Saturday against Leeds as they created a whole host of chances before Pascal Gross's 66th minute strike finally broke the deadlock.

Their nine-match unbeaten run is now Brighton's record number of games without defeat in the top flight and Graham Potter rightfully continues to receive plaudits.

Gross has been key to their brilliant start with the German a stalwart ever since arriving at the Amex Stadium in 2017.

Pascal Gross has been in a superb form for Brighton in a more advanced role so far this season

However, he has been pushed into a more advanced role this year and is excelling, with the midfielder already contributing three goals and one assist - in the whole of last season he scored twice and added four assists.

Gross's statistics this year are evidence of his attacking contributions. The German has taken 3.75 touches in the opposition box and 1.50 shots per 90 mins.

This is in comparison to 2.47 touches and 1.16 shots per 90 mins in 2020-21 and 2.86 touches and 1.06 shots per 90 mins last season.

The Seagulls' goalscoring has been their Achilles heel in recent years - Potter will hope Gross's good form can continue to ensure this isn't a problem this time out.
