Liverpool are close to completing the deal for Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili as the Georgia international is set to become the Reds' first signing under Arne Slot's era.

Previously, Mail Sport revealed that Liverpool stepped up in their talks to sign the 23-year-old player, and after several rounds of negotiations, the deal is close to being sealed.

It was suggested that Bournemouth could be a possible destination for the Georgian, but such a move would breach Premier League rules as the Reds can't buy and then loan a player to a league rival in the same transfer window.

However, Mamardashvili is considering the possibility of staying on loan at Valencia this season, particularly since Liverpool's number one, Alisson, is expected to remain at the club.

The Georgian goalkeeper joined Valencia on loan in the summer of 2021 and later signed a permanent contract until 2027 the following year.

Los Ches's goalkeeper is set to become first Liverpool's signing of this transfer window

Since then, he has been regarded as one of the top-performing goalkeepers in LaLiga, with reports from AS that Los Ches' main shareholder, Peter Lim, was unwilling to negotiate a deal involving such a key player for the squad.

Mamardashvili featured in all of Georgia's Euro 2024 games and left a strong impression of his skills, notably after his side beat Portugal with a stunning display of five saves from the goalkeeper.

The 23-year-old player is an academy product of Dinamo Tbilisi but made his first steps into senior football in the Georgian team Metalurgi Rustavi.

Mamardashvili already played for 90 minutes for Valencia in their LaLiga opening game against Barcelona on Saturday.

So far, the Reds remain the only club in Europe's top five leagues yet to make a signing this transfer window after failing to convince their top target, Martin Zubimendi, who will stay at his boyhood club Real Sociedad for another year.

The development comes after the Red's top target Martin Zubimendi rejected the club and is set to stay at his boyhood club Real Sociedad

However, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot hit back at criticism regarding the club's pragmatic approach in considering additions to the squad.

'I've said many times already, our squad is really strong – and it's not easy to find players who can help us or strengthen the squad. Zubimendi was one of them, to be fair, but he decided not to come. We go forward with the ones we have. We are in a good place', said the Reds' manager.
