Rafa Benitez aimed a savage dig at Jamie Carragher by jokingly revealing how much the Liverpool legend would cost in today's inflated transfer market.

Benitez, who took charge at Anfield over a six-year spell and memorably won the Champions League in 2005, was the latest guest on the Stick to Football podcast by Sky Bet, joining Carragher, Gary Neville, Ian Wright, Jill Scott and Roy Keane.

On the show, he discussed his coaching career in detail with talking points ranging from Istanbul glory to 'saving' Everton after spending a frugal amount on transfers.

But he also took a moment to make a joke about Carragher while discussing the exorbitant fees splashed out in deals by rival Premier League clubs.

Asked how he set Liverpool up to compete at the top, Benitez said: 'It's not what you have spent in one year, it's what you have spent already.

Rafa Benitez reveals why Sir Alex Ferguson was 'so worried about Liverpool' during 2000-09 season

'So they were much better, much better players. So it's like when they say, "[Sir Alex] Ferguson has spent this or that," no, no.

'Because you have the two Nevilles [Gary and Phil], you have [Paul] Scholes, you have [Ryan] Giggs. These players were millions if you go to the market, so you have this advantage.

'We had Carragher and [Steven] Gerrard, that was millions also but...'

Benitez then joked: 'If you want to buy Gerrard and Carra this time, you pay £200m...

'£180m for Gerrard and £20m for Carragher!'

Benitez coached Carragher during his six-year stint at Liverpool between 2004 and 2010

Everyone on the panel - including the butt of the punchline - burst into laughter with Neville particularly tickled by the brutal comment.

Benitez took charge of 350 games in total at Liverpool but departed in 2010. He went on to coach the likes of Inter Milan, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Newcastle.

The 64-year-old is currently unemployed after being dismissed by Celta Vigo.
