THE NOTEBOOK: New stadium for Man United looks a near impossible task, while Arne Slot does what no Liverpool manager has done since 1975

Liverpool made light work of rivals Manchester United as Arne Slot's men made a statement at Old Trafford.

Luis Diaz bagged a brace before Mo Salah sealed the 3-0 victory on Sunday.

The Reds made it three wins from three under their new manager while Erik ten Hag finds himself back under pressure.

New stadium hard to envisage

The talk at Old Trafford regarding the stadium development is that if a complete rebuild is required it would be possible to continue playing here until a replacement ground was built next door. 

Walking across the teeming car parks ahead of kick off here, it was hard to imagine how that could possibly be done. The site upon which Old Trafford stands is big but is it really that big?

Legends in attendance

The great and the good of football past were here for what pretty much remains the biggest game on the Premier League calendar. 

Most were present in a media capacity and I think we just about had a team: James; Neville, Carragher, Stam, Le Saux; Ljungberg, Keane, Scholes; Hignett; Dublin, Fjortoft.

Slot follows in the footsteps of Paisley

Almost unnoticed, Arne Slot emerged from the tunnel 30 minutes before kick-off and strolled down the touchline to watch his team warm up.

With his familiar blue raincoat tucked over is arm, he looked like a chap on his way to the bank. 

The task ahead of him was huge, though. No Liverpool manager had won his first game against United since Bob Paisley in 1975. Even more pertinent is that the last Anfield boss to win at Old Trafford at the first time of asking was George Kay in 1936.

No option but to turn to youth 

United’s Brazilian veteran Casemiro had a horrible first half and was ripe for the hook. But who would Erik ten Hag have replaced him with?

The only viable candidate – new signing Manuel Ugarte – was in the stands while another – Scott McTominay – is currently unpacking his belonging in Naples.

So welcome 20-year-old Toby Collyer, a 20-year-old taken from the Brighton academy two years ago.

Problems on and off the pitch

United’s first half malaise spread to the press room where the coffee machine spluttered to a halt. 

‘This is Old Trafford, though,’ quipped former Liverpool goalkeeper David James. ‘One cup of coffee and everything could change.’
