Liverpool have completed the signing of highly-rated teenage forward Rio Ngumoha from Chelsea.

The Premier League approved the deal on Wednesday after the Reds passed the five-step review which is common practice when a young player wishes to move between two category one academies.

It comes after reports in July that the 16-year-old wished to leave Chelsea and make the switch to Anfield.

Chelsea, who under Todd Boehly’s ownership have consistently spent big money on youngsters, were reported to be furious about the prospect of losing Ngumoha.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has reported that the Reds are convinced they have signed a 'top, super talent for the future' while John Terry sent the youngster a message on Instagram.

It's added that the Reds see the forward as a 'big talent for the present and future, and part of a first team long term project'.

Ngumoha will join on a scholar’s contract and he is said to be motivated by the pathway and opportunities on offer at Liverpool – most notably a second-string team of youngsters winning the Carabao Cup final against Chelsea last season.

In a message on Instagram, he said that he was 'delighted' to sign for the Reds, while he also thanked Chelsea's academy.

Chelsea legend John Terry was among those to react to the news, as he commented: 'Good luck mate.'

It follows the trend of Liverpool poaching talented youngsters from around the country, such as Trey Nyoni and Amara Nallo from Leicester and West Ham respectively last summer.

He will start off with Marc Bridge-Wilkinson's under-18s squad and could make his debut at home to Blackburn Rovers on September 14.

Compensation between the clubs has yet to be agreed, with development costs and a tribunal likely to be required to determine the sum.

Liverpool had a relatively quiet summer which only came alive right at the end, with one signing for this season, and another to join up next summer.

Federico Chiesa joined from Juventus in a cut-price deal worth £12.5m, while Georgia goalkeeper Giori Mamardashvili will link up with the Reds next summer after joining from Valencia in a £29m deal plus a further £4m in add-ons.
