Pep Guardiola reveals Man City are considering a winter break in Abu Dhabi for players not involved at the World Cup with Erling Haaland and Riyad Mahrez among those set to enjoy a warm-weather training camp

  • Manchester City are thinking of travelling to Abu Dhabi for their winter break
  • Pep Guardiola thinks it would be a good idea to train in the capital's hot climate
  • Only players absent from the Qatar World Cup would be able to travel to Dubai
  • City have not been to Abu Dhabi - the home of their owners - since March 2018

Pep Guardiola confirmed that Manchester City are considering a warm-weather winter break in Abu Dhabi.

The Premier League champions scrapped an idea to head there last January given a coronavirus outbreak but have loose plans around a short camp for the small number of players not at the World Cup.

City have not been to Abu Dhabi, the home of Sheikh Mansour, since March 2018 – and any travel would be following almost a fortnight off after facing Brentford on November 12.

‘To take a break with good training sessions and good weather where our owners are there so maybe we will do it,’ the City boss added.

‘Maybe a few days after we come back from 10 days off after Brentford. Maybe we have a few days here and then travel there but it is not 100 per cent confirmed, but we are going to try.’

Kalvin Phillips and Kyle Walker were thought to be effectively ruled out for England but Guardiola revealed that it is now ‘likely’ both players are available for Qatar.

Should the pair make it, then the only senior players left behind would be Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez and the injured Erling Haaland, with the rest expected to receive call-ups.

‘It’s likely, from the way they recover,’ Guardiola said. ‘I don’t know the intention with Kyle but the doctors know better than me.

‘Gareth (Southgate) has spoken to the players directly. From what I hear in the dressing room, it is likely they can be ready. You don’t play a World Cup every week. We’ve been impressed with Kyle’s recovery but he is late compared to Kalvin.’

Guardiola – who could ring the changes against Sevilla in the Champions League on Wednesday night – is refusing to rush back Phillips from a shoulder injury.

‘I know how important the World Cup is but I’m not going to use a player if they are not ready in physicality or rhythm,’ he said.

‘My feeling right now is all the games will be tight with an incredible amount of games in a short space of time. That is why we will evaluate if he is in the best condition to play.’
