Pep Guardiola praised Rico Lewis after the 17-year-old became Manchester City's youngest ever scorer in the Champions League.  

Lewis scored City's equaliser as they came from a goal down to beat Sevilla 3-1 at the Etihad on an otherwise uneventful evening in Manchester.  

Starting at right-back for Pep Guardiola's youthful-looking side for the dead rubber against the Spanish outfit, Lewis was mobbed by his delighted team-mates after latching onto a through-ball from Julian Alvarez.

Lewis appeared a combination of shocked and exhilarated as he celebrated the best moment of his career to date with equally pleased team-mates. 

Speaking after the game, Guardiola, who gave Lewis his Champions League debut a matter of weeks ago against FC Copenhagen, praised his intelligence as a player. 

'What a goal, he’s a fantastic player,' he said. 'He's so intelligent and so clever. He has the skills, he scored a fantastic goal. 

'He was brilliant to go head on against the goalkeeper and score such a goal.' 

Starting alongside fellow academy graduates Phil Foden and Cole Palmer, Lewis appeared particularly delighted to revel in the moment alongside them.

For the funds spent by the club since the takeover by Abu Dhabi at the end of the 2000s, the club have brought through a number of players from the academy - with many hoping Lewis will prove to be the next along the production line. 

Reacting to the moment on social media, City fans praised the young man for his goal and overall performance.

'Rico Lewis remember the name,' one wrote, referencing some famous lines of commentary from down the years.

'What a goal from Rico Lewis. This kid has a future at Manchester City. I’m so sure of it,' another wrote. 

Meanwhile, another perhaps predicted a bright future for the young starlet, saying that every time he appeared he delivered for the club.   

'Rico Lewis, remember the name. Every game this guy has played he’s been brilliant!'

Another chose to focus on the special moment for the academy graduate. 

'What a moment for Rico Lewis that is. Brilliant.'

Lewis became the fifth youngest Englishman to start in the competition behind Jack Wilshere, Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and Josh McEachran.
