Chelsea legend Ruud Gillit has ripped into the club, claiming they are 'horrible' and 'embarrassing' while blasting their current crop of players.

The Dutchman led Chelsea to the FA Cup in 1997 - making history by becoming the first foreign boss to lift the trophy.

Current boss Mauricio Pochettino's side have endured a miserable season, with the Blues hoping to salvage a European place from another year where they have spent an incredible amount of money, with very little improvement to show on the pitch.

In an interview with The Sun, Gullit has expressed his outrage over the penalty shootout debacle that stole the headlines from what otherwise was an excellent performance in a 6-0 victory over Everton.

Noni Madueke and Nicolas Jackson argued that they should take the penalty before captain Conor Gallagher had to intervene and give the ball to designated taker Cole Palmer

He said: 'It was like watching kids, children. In a proper team that doesn't happen. It's embarrassing.

'For Pochettino it's embarrassing. For the board, it's embarrassing.

'Can you imagine me having a fight with Marco van Basten, on the pitch? That's crazy? Or someone at United having a fight with Roy Keane.'

The penalty drama was not their first season, with Raheem Sterling attempting to take the penalty over Palmer in a 2-2 draw with Arsenal last October, while Madueke also looked to take it over the former Man City academy star in their 4-3 victory over Manchester United - before Trevoh Chalobah pulled him away.

Gullit also mentioned the 1-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-final, insisting that it was the one 'moment' they could beat Pep Guardiola's side, who he claimed were 'f*****' as they looked tired following their Champions League exit to Real Madrid.

The former Chelsea boss added: 'If you are Chelsea and you can't take advantage of that - my God! It was horrible.'

In his interview he also claimed that Chelsea have signed too many players and that manager Pochettino would have known this when he became manager of the club.

He also criticised the club's lack of quality as he gave a damning verdict on the current crop of players.

He said: 'They all all think they are better than they are. And that's the worst thing of all. They have too many players who think they are better than they really are.'

Chelsea had the better of the chances during their clash with Manchester City but failed to take them before Bernardo Silva scored late on.

The club face a fight on their hands to make Europe next season as they sit ninth on 47 points.

However, they are three points behind sixth-placed Newcastle with a game-in-hand, which could earn them a Europa League spot.

They are next in action on Tuesday, with a tricky trip to league leaders Arsenal.
