Fifteen of Gareth Southgate's provisional 33-man England squad for the Euros didn't start for their clubs last weekend, underlying why the England manager described Tuesday's announcement as the "most complicated" he's known.

A mixture of injuries and being dropped account for nearly half the players Southgate is taking to Germany being short of their normal match sharpness.

Whilst Luke Shaw is the most serious issue having last played for Manchester United on February 18, he is not the only concern.

Manchester City pair Jack Grealish and John Stones have been sparsely used by Pep Guardiola and didn't get off the bench for their title clincher against West Ham on Sunday.

Goalkeepers Aaron Ramsdale and James Trafford aren't first-choice for their teams Arsenal and Burnley and Liverpool's Curtis Jones only got a late cameo in Jurgen Klopp's final match.

Southgate will pay special attention when his players report for training to Lewis Dunk (knee), Harry Kane (back), Harry Maguire (muscular), Anthony Gordon (ankle) and Bukayo Saka who were all absent at the weekend.

Jude Bellingham was rested by Real Madrid with the Chanpions League final in mind but there will be concern about Kieran Trippier who has started only once since March 2 and looked rusty in that game against Manchester United.

Joe Gomez has only been used as cover at Liverpool since Andy Robertson's return while Jarrod Bowen's absence at The Etihad was due to illness.

Better news for Southgate was Eberechi Eze scoring twice in Crystal Palace's 5-0 win over Aston Villa. Palace defender Marc Guehi started his first match since February because of a knee injury and completed 76 minutes.
