Manchester City won the Community Shield for the first time since 2019 by beating local rivals Manchester United in a penalty shootout on Saturday.

United took the lead at Wembley courtesy of a slick run and finish by Alejandro Garnacho in the 82nd minute.

But City hit back seven minutes later through Bernardo Silva to equalise and force penalties.

United got off to a dream start in the shootout when Andre Onana kept out Silva's effort, but City eventually prevailed 7-6 - after Ederson thwarted Jadon Sancho and Jonny Evans missed the target.

Mail Sport's JOE BERNSTEIN was at Wembley and provided the following player ratings.

MAN CITY (4-3-3)

EDERSON – 7

Came into his own during the penalty shoot-out, saving from Sancho and then scoring himself low into the corner. Little chance with Garnacho's strike during regulation time.

RICO LEWIS – 7

Mr Versatile slotted in at right-back with Kyle Walker still on a break. Got forward to create Haaland's best opportunity and gave an energetic show in front of England interim manager Lee Carlsey.

MANUEL AKANJI – 6.5

Kept his nerve to score decisive penalty. Had sprayed ball about as he'd done for Switzerland at Euros but was fortunate that Fernandes was ruled offside after he allowed the United skipper to run off him.

RUBEN DIAS – 6

Might have found it easier against a physical force like Hojlund. Found Fernandes harder to cope with as a false nine and faces challenge to keep his place. Took his spot-kick well.

JOSKO GVARDIOL – 5.5

Guardiola sees him as a left-back but still doesn't look comfortable there. Most of United's chances came down his side and he got in Dias' way to allow Garnacho to score opening the goal.

MATEO KOVACIC – 6

Played the Rodri role and his distribution was impeccable to help City's passing carousel. However, his lack of athleticism made them vulnerable in transition.

NICO O'REILLY – 6.5

A proud moment for the teenager who has been at City's academy from the age of eight. Didn't look out of place facing up United's midfield and good to see another Mancunian in the derby.

JAMES McATEE - 7

After two seasons on loan at Sheffield United, this was an impressive step up in class and he was very unlucky with a shot that struck the post midway through the first half.

OSCAR BOBB – 8

Continued his impressive form on City's pre-season tour of America. Brave on the ball and was annoyed to shoot over after cutting inside Martinez. Finally got his reward with a perfect cross for Bernardo's equaliser.

ERLING HAALAND – 5.5

His Wembley jinx continues despite nabbing seven goals on City's pre-season tour of America. Hasn't scored at England's national stadium in regulation play and was deprived of quality service.

JEREMY DOKU - 7

The Belgian winger was a real livewire and gave Dalot all sorts of problems, leaving him embarrassed at one point with an outrageous nutmeg at top speed.

SUBS

Savinho (for Doku 63) – 6.5

Nunes (for O'Reilly 63) - 6

Bernardo (for McAtee 80) – 6.5

Ake (for Gvardiol 90) - 6

De Bruyne (for Bobb 90) - 6

PEP GUARDIOLA – 6.5

After three Community Shield defeats in a row, will have been relieved to get over the line.

MAN UTD (4-2-3-1)

ANDRE ONANA – 6

Thought his penalty save from Bernardo would make him a hero before City's comeback. Bernardo's 89th-minute header was the first effort on target he'd faced.

DIOGO DALOT - 5

Has to up his game with fresh competition due to arrive from Bayern Munich in the form of Noussair Mazraoui. Had trouble containing Doku's speed and direct running.

HARRY MAGUIRE – 6.5

Lasted an hour despite being a pre-match injury doubt and ten Hag was glad of his reassuring presence. A threat at set pieces in the opposition box too.

JONNY EVANS – 5.5

The 36-year-old tried manfully to keep up with Bobb and City's other youngsters but will be more of a stand-in this season. Horrible penalty cost United the shoot-out.

LISANDRO MARTINEZ - 5

Fast-tracked into action after winning the Copa America with Argentina. Started at left-back but erred after returning to the middle, allowing Bobb to dribble past and set up City's equaliser.

CASEMIRO - 6

This is a big season for the Brazilian who has been written off as a has-been. Still good on the ball but the legs didn't always move as quick as they should and was lucky with a challenge on McAtee.

KOBBIE MAINOO - 6

Failed to repeat his man-of-the-match performance in May's FA Cup final but that's no surprise. The youngster had time off after the Euros and this was his first action since.

AMAD DIALLO - 7

Justified getting selected ahead of Antony on the right. Chose to pass to Mount rather than shoot after breaking free in the box and it was the wrong decision.

MASON MOUNT – 5.5

United fans will be pleased to see him on the pitch after last season's injury woes but his relationship with Fernandes is still not clicking. Failed to reach Diallo's cutback.

MARCUS RASHFORD - 5

Had a nightmare in front of Carsley. Missed three presentable chances including a sitter in front of goal midway through the second half. Was hooked before the penalties.

BRUNO FERNANDES – 6.5

Not as effective as a false nine as he'd been at the FA Cup final but took leader's responsibility to score opening penalty and also console Sancho after he'd missed. Thought he'd scored with brilliant curler in second half but was ruled marginally offside.

SUBS

Scott McTominay (for Mount 59) - 6

Toby Collyer (for Mainoo 59) - 6

Facundo Pellistri (for Maguire 59) – 5.5

Alejandro Garnacho (for Diallo 59) - 7

Jadon Sancho (for Rashford 83) – 5.5

ERIK TEN HAG - 6

Another strange performance from United. They looked second best but still had the best chances. Up in the stands, Dan Ashworth and the other execs will want more.

REFEREE: Jarred Gillet - 7
