Luke Shaw has hailed Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag from bringing a sense of discipline back to the club.

Despite his goalscoring form, Marcus Rashford was not named in the Dutchman's starting eleven for United game against Wolves on Saturday.

Ten Hag would later cite 'internal discipline' as his justification for leaving the England international on the bench at Molineux, with Rashford entering the game in the second half before scoring to secure a 1-0 victory.

Rashford later explained that discipline his manager referred to came after he was absent from the team's pre-match meeting.

Speaking following their victory on Saturday, Shaw explained that the former Ajax boss has instilled a sense of discipline into his star-studded squad.

'At a top club like this, it has to be like that,' Shaw told BT Sport. 'I think that people can't do whatever they want and maybe that's been part of the problem in the past with people getting away with silly little things.

'The manager takes all of that into consideration. Like you've seen today, if you're not keeping the standards high then you won't play.'

Shaw also heaped praise on his international teammate's recent performances: 'I think he's in a really good way at the moment. He's extremely confident, very positive, very happy and it's nice to see it.

'Everyone knows the quality that he's got. He's world class and he could be one of the best in the world if he keeps going and hopefully he does do that.'

Rashford isn't the first player to receive sanctions for his behaviour from the new United boss. Cristiano Ronaldo was dropped after refusing to appear as a late substitute in the club's win over Spurs in October.

Ronaldo's relationship with the Ten Hag reached a breaking point after he made a number of explosive comments during a TV interview, and the 37-year-old ultimately left the club to join Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr in a landmark deal earlier this week.
