- Lazio were linked with a loan for Greenwood but a move didn't materialise
Lazio have claimed that Manchester United are to blame for their failed move for Mason Greenwood as the forward instead joined Getafe on deadline day.
The 21-year-old completed his move to the La Liga side and they will not be paying a fee for, but will cover a small contribution of his wages for the duration of the loan.
However, it looked likely that he would end up in the Serie A on deadline day as Lazio were heavily linked with a move for the English forward.
Lazio's president, Claudio Lotito, claims Greenwood was keen to join the Serie A club but United did not sign the paperwork in time.
'I tried until the last minute,' Lotito told La Lazio Siamo Noi after the transfer window slammed shut in Italy.

He continued to blame Manchester United for the failed move, saying: 'They didn't countersign in time. He wanted to come to Lazio.'
United Chief John Murtough had taken over discussions for Mason Greenwood’s proposed move to Getafe.
The move was confirmed in the final hours of the transfer window, with the 21-year-old spending the season in La Liga.
Greenwood hasn't played competitive football since December 2021, following his arrest back in January 2022 on suspicion of a number of offences including attempted rape.
United concluded their own investigation and the Red Devils decided that Greendoow's future no longer remained at Old Trafford.
Therefore, he has been granted a loan exit and will most likely leave the club on a permanent basis after his time at Getafe is up.
