Roy Keane blasts 'idiot' Marcus Rashford and tells him to forget the big-money 'cars and watches' after he missed training following 12-hour Belfast tequila bender

Roy Keane has called Marcus Rashford an 'idiot' for his behaviour, after the Man United forward missed training last week after he was spotted in a Belfast nightclub.

The former Man United captain also urged the 26-year-old to forget about flash cars and glamorous watches and focus on putting his football first.

It comes after footage emerged on social media last week showing the United forward entering the Thompsons Garage nightclub in Belfast, before missing a training session at Carrington on Friday morning.

Erik ten Hag had stated that the official reason for his absence was due to 'illness' with reports claiming Rashford had gone on a '12-hour tequila bender' and had subsequently angered several of his team-mates after being absent from training.

The forward has now 'taken responsibility' for the incident but former United captain, Keane, has urged Rashford to focus on his football.

Speaking on the , brought to you by Sky Bet, Keane said: 'We talk about him [Marcus Rashford], he's a young lad, lots of pressure and he's local, but it doesn't look like he's enjoying his football anymore.

'It goes hand in hand, what is happening off the pitch and on it.

'Football looks like it's a chore to him, and it shouldn't be. There's pressure on everybody there, but he's a big player for Manchester United. He's shown before that he can produce.

He added on Rashford, who tops the list of Premier League stars with the most expensive car collection: 'The cars, the watches, all that is great, but don't forget what comes first – your football.

'Good luck with all that other stuff, but if that is becoming more important than your football, then you're in trouble.'

Rashford was not selected for Man United's 4-2 FA Cup fourth-round victory against Newport County at the weekend, with he and his agent brother Dwaine Maynard holding talks with the Man United boss on Monday.

On Wednesday, Ten Hag had stated that the 'case was now closed' and echoed Keane's comments that the 26-year-old needed to focus on football.

'First of all, the players at this level need to manage themselves, that is what you can demand from the player,' Ten Hag said in a press conference ahead of United's game against Wolves on Thursday. 'The player has to know what is good and not good.'

Keane added that while everyone makes mistakes, Rashford was making himself an easy target due to his 'behaviour, which is that of an idiot'.

'I don’t think he [Marcus Rashford] was ever that perfect,' Kean said on the podcast. 'The stuff he was doing off the field, which he gets a lot of credit for.

'I never thought he had some halo above his head, but I also don’t think for one minute that he’s some sort of nasty lad.

'I think he’s certainly made a few mistakes very close to each other. The profile of Manchester United, the fact United are struggling, he’s an easy target – his decision-making currently is obviously not very good.

'He’s 26 – we’ve all been there and made daft mistakes. I don’t think his attitude is one of not caring about the game, but his behaviour is that of an idiot.

'He’s making a few mistakes on the back of each other. He’s high-profile now, we see people out there on their phones, wanting to ring in and get players in trouble.

'He’s giving people that opportunity to go after him.'

Rashford had been involved in a similar incident back in October 2023, following Man United's 3-0 defeat by City rivals Man City.

He had risked infuriating his manager after he was seen pictured heading to high-end Manchester nightspot Chinawhite to celebrate his 26th birhday.

Ten Hag had stated after that incident: 'I spoke with him about it. It's unacceptable. He apologised and that is it.

'For us it's an internal matter. He [Rashford] is very motivated to put things right. He's totally with us.

'He has made a mistake but that doesn't say he's not fitting in. I see him every day in training, what he's doing, I know.'

Away from the pitch, Rashford has previously been hailed as the first millionaire modern 'activist footballer' with a social conscience that ran alongside his brilliant performances on the football field.

Rashford had raised £20million to fight poverty, had piled pressure on Downing Street over child hunger and was also appointed an MBE in 2020 by the Queen for a campaign to help provide free school meals.

This season though he has struggled for goals, having only found the back of the net four times in 26 appearances, a far cry from his 30-goal haul last season.

It comes as Mail Sport had reported earlier this week that some Man United staff had 'worries about Rashford's party lifestyle as early as 2021'
