Rasmus Hojlund has hailed teammate Kobbie Mainoo as ‘a generational talent’ who can help take Manchester United into a bright new era.

Mainoo scored a sensational 97th-minute winner to give United a 4-3 win over Wolves in a thrilling encounter at Molineux on Thursday night.

It followed the teenager’s first senior goal in the FA Cup win at Newport County on Sunday as he continues to enjoy a breakthrough season at United.

Mainoo has impressed the rest of the squad with his maturity and composure since stepping up to the first-team group under Erik ten Hag

Hojlund has become close friends with the Stockport-born midfielder since joining United for £72million in the summer and believes Mainoo has the world at his feet.

‘We have a generational talent in Kobbie Mainoo,’ said Hojlund. ‘You can see his composure, he is so relaxed on the ball. So much quality on the ball. Now he's also starting to show that he has the scoring parts of his game as well. He's a complete player.

‘It’s not about taking the responsibility, he’s so relaxed, so calm, he knows his quality and he knows when he goes out there he’s going to perform. Everybody knows that from the team and you guys can see it as well now. He’s a top player.’

On their friendship, Hojlund added: ‘We enjoy things, spending time outside together. Us young guys, we have a little group and we're chatting to each other. It's very cool to have other young players around the team and hopefully we can set an era for the club and be here many years together.

‘If you're good enough, you're old enough and I think that's a good thing. We're here for a reason.’

Hojlund also scored in the win at Wolves with his fourth goal in the last five games, and had an assist on Marcus Rashford’s opener as United’s forward line appeared to be clicking at last.

‘Yes, we’re starting to understand each other better in the team,’ added Hojlund. ‘I think I’m getting used to the Premier League and the tempo and how we play as a team and these sort of things.

‘Offensively, I think we were very great. We created a lot of chances and four goals is a lot and we could score even more so very happy with that.

‘It’s good to see, I hope we can keep going, keep the confidence in the team, keep providing for each other. I think that’s key. We’re being selfish when we have to but we also play for each other.’

Hojlund now has nine goals for the season, although it took him until Boxing Day to get off the mark in the Premier League.

‘If you ask me, I would have loved to score my first goal in September or October,’ he said. ‘I knew I could score goals and I’d shown it in the Champions League and at my previous clubs. But, of course, opening the account it’s always like “ok, I can do it”.’
