A late rush of blood by Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana threw Burnley a relegation lifeline at Old Trafford.

United had been set to take the points when Antony capitalised on a mistake by Sander Berge after 80 minutes to put the home side in front.

But Onana – who had made a string of saves earlier in the afternoon – blotted his copybook by charging into Zeki Amdouni as he came for a cross.

Referee John Brook was advised by VAR to check his monitor and Amdouni made no mistake from the spot with only three minutes of normal time remaining.

The result left United in sixth place while Vincent Kompany's team moved to within two points of safety with Nottingham Forest facing Manchester City on Sunday.

In an entertaining match that produced 43 shots, the only surprise was there weren't more goals with Bruno Fernandes hitting the woodwork for United and Onana twice making brilliant saves to deny Lyle Foster.

For Erik ten Hag there was also the embarrassment of being booed by his own fans when he decided to take Kobbie Mainoo off midway through the second half.

Despite Burnley's lowly league position, they turned up at Old Trafford in marginally better form than their hosts.

Vincent Kompany's side had taken 10 points from their previous seven matches compared to United's nine.

A remarkably open start saw David Fofana get goalside of United's emergency centre-half Casemiro after only 19 seconds only to fire straight at Onana.

United went straight up the other end with Alejandro Garnacho firing over from eight yards.

Antony then tried his luck from 25 yards and Cristian Eriksen curled wide as home pressure grew.

Antony, who has endured a disappointing season following allegations over his private life, looked in the mood to shine. The winger played one outrageous pass with his back and then tested Muric with a low drive.

When Burnley almost self-imploded by presenting Christian Eriksen with the ball midway in their own half, the Dane released Bruno Fernandes was stopped by a brilliant block from Maxime Esteve.

Fernandes also wrapped the crossbar after some good hold-up play by Rasmus Hojlund as United knocked on the door.

Not that Burnley didn't carry their own threat as well. After 27 minutes, Wilson Odobert's curler from outside the box forced Onana into an acrobatic tip-over.

United's famously flimsy defence then gave up another chance inside the box for Foster who couldn't get his feet sorted out and stabbed wide. 

Vincent Kompany was on his feet in the technical area urging encouragement and it took a worldie save by Onana to keep the scores level after 35 minutes.

Josh Cullen set up Foster whose header was heading for the top corner before Onana reached it with a terrific spring and tip around the post.

It was the same match-up again when Sander Berge slid in Foster. The forward only had Onana to beat but the big Cameroon stopper narrowed the angle and smothered his shot.

A goalless first half wasn't what watching Olympic superstar and United diehard Usain Bolt had wanted to see on his Old Trafford visit.

He was probably wondering if Marcus Rashford might have made an impact. The struggling England forward was absent again having suffered a knock during last weekend's FA Cup semi-final, since when he's sent a late-night social media post to defend himself against online abuse.

United started the second half brightly. Garnacho wriggled his way past Lorenz Assignon but from his cutback, Antony couldn't convert. The Brazilian then had a shot parried by Muric who spread himself to stop Rasmus Hojlund capitalising on the rebound.

Garnacho then opted to fire on goal when released by Fernandes whilst Hojlund waited in the box for a cross that never came.

When Hojlund then squared to Aaron wan-Bissaka instead of shooting himself, the defender waited too long for the ball to reach him and the chance was wasted.

Ten Hag's double substitution midway through the second half provoked boos around Old Trafford when Mainoo's No 37 number was put on the board. He and Hojlund departed with Scott McTominay and Amad Diallo on in their place.

The response was almost immediate with Garnacho catching a half-volley just right that Muric turned away.

United's only fit senior central defender Harry Maguire underlined his worth with a terrific block to deny Lorenz Assignon after Cullen and Berge had sliced open the home defence.

The deadlock was finally broken when Berge's crossfield pass in his own half was intercepted by the alert Antony.

He then sprinted away to beat Muric and looked emotional at scoring, burying his head on Fernandes' shoulder and pushing the ball under his shirt and displaying a cuddly toy to mark his girlfriend's pregnancy.

Burnley refused to throw in the towel and had Onana to thank for a leveller. He came out to get a cross and careered into Amdouni as he missed.

The Cameroon international got away with a similar challenge against Wolves on the opening weekend of the season but not this time.

Amdouni slotted the penalty and Burnley still have hope as they extended their run to one defeat in eight.
