Joey Barton has taken aim at Gary Neville, calling the pundit a 'little shop steward' and claiming he knows 'little to nothing about football' on the heels of Manchester United's humbling at the hands of Crystal Palace

Erik ten Hag's side were torn apart by the competent and confident hosts at Selhurst Park on Monday evening, who claimed four goals without reply in what might have been a let-off for the shambolic visitors

Neville's frequent Sky Sports co-host Jamie Carragher labelled the side 'one of the most poorly coached teams in the Premier League' and both Paul Scholes and Michael Owen called for Ten Hag's resignation, which leaves United glued to eighth place with just three games to play.

Barton has previously made Neville the focus of his ire on social media, and wasted no time making the former United man the target after sharing a comment in response to a video of Neville filmed in pre-season.

In the video, Neville claimed that Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp would be envious of United's midfield selection, citing Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, and Christian Eriksen as examples of the Red Devils' talented ranks.

But while Carragher also mocked Neville's poorly aged statements in the wake of the defeat, Barton wasted no time offering his corrections for the 'sage of football', as well as drawing upon his links to League Two side Salford City.

'I wonder how the sage of football is feeling this morning (Gary Neville)?,' Barton shared on social media site X (formerly Twitter). 'Salford finished 20th in League 2 after another £5-6m spend.

Gary Neville and Man United's Class of '92 legends seek external funding for Salford City after stalling in League Two since 2019 despite heavy backing

'He must be about £35-40m of Philip Lim’s money in now.

'Why anybody listens to the clown is beyond me.

'He was a great right back in a great Man Utd team. Managed his whole career by one of the best managers ever.

'He knows little to nothing about football. Proof is in the pudding. Valencia job, England Assistant coach (Kane taking corners and Iceland), his weekly opinions and Salford tenure attest to that.

'Little, shop steward who thinks he knows everything. Turns out he can’t do anything. So he does everything.

'Jack of all trades, master of none. Stick to Dragons Den Neville you little t**.'

Neville is one of a number of Man United's famed Class of '92 who bought Salford 10 years ago, but despite a run of four promotions, the club have stalled in the fourth division and in February sought external funding to boost their next promotion push.

The pundit has previously been candid about his tumultuous time in charge of Valencia between 2015 and 2016, which saw Neville hold office for just four months - during which time he won just three of his 16 league games in charge.

Speaking on his podcast Stick to Football last week, Neville spoke honestly about he struggled to understand what was going on from the dugout.

'I remember we played three times against Athletic Bilbao, in the Europa League quarter-final and in a league game, and Ernesto Valverde was the coach – he played a different system that I thought he would and then he changed during the game, and I remember thinking that I was nowhere near that level,' Neville said.

'I felt massively inferior to him because I struggled to manage and watch the game from pitch level, especially compared to how I see the game in the gantry.

Joey Barton THREATENS Gary Neville, telling him 'keep your head down or you will get emptied'... after pundit called him out for comparing female pundits to serial killers

'You put yourself on the touchline and you're watching a game where all you can see is legs, and how you think of the game tactically or how managers spot things, I have no idea because I remember thinking that I had no idea what was going on.'

Since vowing that he would never return to management, Neville has become a regular fixture in the gantry with Sky Sports, as well as a podcast host and television personality, most recently invited to join the panel of 'Dragons' on BBC's Dragons Den.

Barton appears to have reserved personal venom for Neville in the wake of the latter's decision to positively respond to ITV's statement after the former dubbed Eni Aluko and Lucy Ward 'the Fred and Rose West of football commentary'.

Comparing the broadcasters to two of Britain's most notorious serial killers represented a new low for the former Fleetwood Town manager, then in the midst of an extraordinary tirade against women working within the men's game.

ITV called Barton's comments 'shameful' which prompted Neville to applaud the channel in a post on social media.

'Well done ITV. It's gone too far this and mentioning serial killers is quite simply incredible,' Neville wrote, before sharing personal examples of members of his family struggling against misogyny in the sport.

'Gary, please keep your head down or you will get emptied as well,' Barton threatened in response. 'I know they pay your wages and I don't want to have to put you away.

'Worry about one of the other 3758 business things you've got going on. I'll decide when it's gone too far. Not you (crown emoji) (thumbs-up emoji)'

Barton - who continues to share misogynistic viewpoints on women commentators and footballers alike - most recently made the baffling claim that Lionel Messi's achievements should be viewed 'with an asterisk' due to growth hormone treatment he underwent as a young adolescent.

The World Cup winner was described as 'genetically modified at a young age' after undergoing treatments paid for by Barcelona following their identification of his stratospheric talent.
