Mauricio Pochettino is one of the favourites to replace Erik ten Hag should Man United dismiss the Dutchman but a new report states it is 'unlikely' he will be in charge at Old Trafford next season.

No final decision has been made on the future of current manager Ten Hag but officials have spoken to a number of potential replacements, including Thomas Frank, Roberto De Zerbi, Thomas Tuchel and Pochettino.

Ratcliffe and his Ineos group have been carrying out a review into the position. United’s shock FA Cup final victory over rivals City has complicated the matter and is thought to have boosted Ten Hag’s case.

Pochettino became a frontrunner after his surprise dismissal from Chelsea at the end of the season.

Chelsea had endured a turbulent start to the 2023-24 campaign, and amid a long list of injuries dropped down the league table, before mounting a late resurgence to finish sixth in the standings.

It is believed that Pochettino would like to remain in the Premier League but a source has told The Telegraph that it is 'unlikely' to be with United.

Pochettino seemed in good spirits as he made his return to Stamford Bridge just weeks after his departure from Chelsea on Sunday night, managing the World XI at Soccer Aid.

England boss Gareth Southgate has emerged as the top candidate for the role if Ratcliffe and INEOS decide to part ways with Ten Hag this summer.

Southgate's contract with England runs until December this year and the FA want to extend it until after the 2026 World Cup.

He hinted in February that he could stay beyond Euro 2024 and will only make up his mind once the tournament is done.
