Marcus Rashford posted a heartfelt farewell message to Scott McTominay on Instagram after the midfielder left Manchester United to join Napoli on deadline day.

McTominay sealed his £25.7million move to the Italian giants, ending his 22-year association with United.

McTominay and Rashford came through the United academy together before breaking into the first team, and Rashford made reference to this in his Instagram post on Friday night.

Alongside a photo of himself and McTominay in the gym together as boys during the early stages of their time at United, Rashford wrote on Instagram: 'It’s been a long journey… Good luck in Italy my friend'.

The Scotland star also took to Instagram following confirmation of his move to Napoli, accompanying a short video of his best United moments with the simple message 'Thank you @ManchesterUnited'.

He scored 29 goals, proving himself a valuable first team player under multiple different managers.

But after slipping down the pecking order over recent months with Erik ten Hag at the helm, McTominay decide to move on.

He has now switched England for Italy to play under former Chelsea and Tottenham manager Antonio Conte.

Rashford remains at United, but has had a quiet start to the season and failed to win his place back in the England squad earlier this week.

He also received fierce criticism from Alan Shearer for his performance in United's 2-1 defeat by Brighton last weekend.

But Ten Hag leapt to his defence on Friday, branding Shearer's analysis 'stupid' as he hit out at the Match of the Day pundit's comments.

Rashford may be under pressure to keep his place in the starting XI at United, though, ahead of Sunday's crunch clash with Liverpool at Old Trafford.
