Federico Valverde has insisted that he does not regret punching Alex Baena following Real Madrid's defeat by Villarreal last week.

Valverde struck Baena in the face during an altercation in the Bernabeu car park as the Spanish midfielder was boarding the team bus.

Baena has since elected to press charges following the incident and Villarreal confirmed in a statement on Sunday night that the police will now be involved.

However, despite the ensuing controversy, sources told The Athletic that Valverde is not remorseful for his actions and is determined to stand by his claim that Baena had previously insulted his pregnant wife if the matter ends up going to court.

The Villareal star has strenuously denied the allegation, writing in block capitals on Instagram following the game: 'IT IS TOTALLY UNTRUE THAT I SAID THAT.'

Baena also released a statement claiming his family had been subjected to death threats following the controversy, adding that he would let the police investigate.

Real Madrid's lawyers have reportedly asked Valverde to maintain complete silence regarding the incident while the matter is resolved.

However, since the incident took place on April 8 the 24-year-old's wife has twice taken to social media to defend her husband's account of the incident, with the posts reportedly not being well received at Marid.

In a post on Twitter Mina Bonino wrote: 'Do I have to explain why they told me that my pregnancy could not continue?

'We were silent for almost two months waiting for the result to know whether or not we could continue, having already five months of pregnancy.

'I have already gone through enough for them to come and question me about my son's health.

'Despite everything, from the bottom of my heart, I don't wish anyone to go through a similar situation.'

The Uruguay international understands that the best thing for the club would be for him to maintain his silence whilst the matter is resolved, though he is believed to have a desire to speak out about the incident.

Had the incident been included in the referee's report a potential ban for such an assault ranges from four to 12 games.
