Real Madrid confirmed on Monday that Xabi Alonso has left his post as first-team manager by mutual agreement, drawing the curtain on a short but deeply scrutinized tenure at the club's helm.

The decision comes after just seven months in charge at the Bernabéu, a period that blended early optimism with mounting pressure and uneven results in La Liga and Europe.

"Real Madrid C. F. wishes to announce that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to bring his time as first-team coach to an end," the club said in a statement.

"Xabi Alonso will always carry the affection and admiration of all Madridistas because he is a Real Madrid legend and has always represented the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home."

The Spanish giant also confirmed the appointment of Álvaro Arbeloa, Alonso's former teammate at Real Madrid, Liverpool, and the Spain national team, as his successor.

Arbeloa arrives from his role managing Real Madrid B, where he impressed club executives enough to be seen as the internal solution capable of steadying the ship.

A turbulent run leads to exit

Alonso's return to Real Madrid in June 2025 was greeted with high expectations. He came off the back of a historic stint at Bayer Leverkusen, where he led the German side to an unbeaten Bundesliga title and a domestic cup, achievements that elevated him into Europe's managerial spotlight.

However, Real Madrid's 2025/26 campaign failed to match that promise. The club endured a patchy run that included losses to key rivals and inconsistency across competitions, leaving them adrift of La Liga leaders and struggling for top form in the Champions League.

Reports from late last year had already suggested Alonso was fighting for his future after a run of just two wins in eight games sparked deep concern among fans and board members alike.
