While awaiting Zinedine Zidane's decision on his future, and regardless of whether he stays at Real Madrid or not, the club are convinced that Kylian Mbappe, their top target to reinforce the team, will join them sooner or later.
It remains to be seen whether that will happen this summer or whether Florentino Perez will have to wait until June 2022, when Mbappe's contract expires, to make his move.
Real Madrid are optimistic about the signals they are receiving from the striker's entourage, but Paris Saint-Germain are far from giving up despite seeing him reject three renewal proposals.
The French side are confident that they will be able to convince him to renew with a better financial offer than Real Madrid could put on the table, given that he already earns 18 million euros net per season.
The Parisian club also hope to keep Mbappe by offering a stronger sporting project that will be more likely to win the Champions League if he stays in the French capital than if he goes to Madrid.
A solid project
With the season ending with the disappointment of missing out on Ligue 1 to Lille, ending a run of six consecutive titles, Mbappe was crowned player of the year on Sunday for his 27 goals and seven assists in 31 games.
"Everyone knows what binds me to this club. I've always been grateful to the president and all my coaches," Mbappe told the media when collecting the award.
"What I want is to win, to feel that I am in a place where I can do it, that there is a solid project around me. I 'eat' football, I live for football, so for me the sporting project is essential."
The French international, who stirred up more mystery with his comments, also hinted at what he will take into account when making a decision on his future.
"I want to feel that the team I'm at can do things," Mbappe said. "I'm talking to the club, we'll see what happens.
"In any case, I'm happy about the four exceptional years I've had here. They know the relationship I have with the club, the city and the country. Things will be done the way they should be done, one way or another."
The agreed strategy
That way of doing things involves following a script that Real Madrid and Mbappe planned some time ago with the intention of avoiding creating tension with PSG, which the forward has followed accordingly to date.
The agreement with Mbappe dates back to the summer of 2017 when Real Madrid moved to bring him to Spain, only to decide to stick with the Bale-Benzema-Cristiano trident and refuse to give him guarantees on game time at the age of 18.
Since then, both through Zidane, his idol, and club directors, Real Madrid have worked hard on the signing, staying in close contact with the youngster and his family.
They have agreed on the strategy of not renewing his contract in Paris in order to force a negotiation, in the summer before the end of his contract, in an advantageous position. It's the same plan that was executed to sign Eden Hazard from Chelsea.
The case of Varane
In order to bring him in, the club needs funds, and the main source of income, in order to raise 130 million euros in sales, is Raphael Varane.
In February, MARCA revealed on the club's suspicions that he could be planning to depart the Spanish capital, given that his contract expires in June 2022.
His agent dragged his feet when he was approached about starting renewal talks, since then, three months have passed and the player continues to say that he wants to think about it before committing his future.
Varane wants to finish his contract and be able to decide his future as a free agent, safe in the knowledge that Manchester United are keen, as they were in 2019.
After 10 years at Real Madrid, the idea of starting a new adventure appeals to him just as much as a better economic offer does, though he currently earns six million euros per season.
If he does not agree to renew his contract, Real Madrid will try to sell him this summer, and the ideal scenario for Los Blancos would be a swap deal involving Mbappe and PSG.
At Valdebebas, the club hope to bring in at least 70 million euros for a proven player like Varane, who due to his experience, proven quality and world champion status, is one of the most sought-after centre-backs in the world.
Last week, The Mirror reported that Manchester United were preparing an offer of 46 million euros for him.
His possible departure, regardless of the future of Sergio Ramos, is being considered given the imminent arrival of the versatile David Alaba and the strong form of Eder Militao and Nacho.
Haaland would become first choice
Although Real Madrid's first priority is the signing of Mbappe, if PSG refuse to negotiate for him, Erling Haaland will immediately become the first choice to reinforce the club's attacking options.
Despite the disappointment of the failed Super League project and the 350 million euros that it was going to bring in, Real Madrid are still determined to bring together the two most wanted forwards in the game.
Their plan was to wait until the summer of 2022 to sign Haaland, but they will adapt their strategy to bring him in now if they have to wait for Mbappe.
Despite that plan, Borussia Dortmund have been adamant that they will not transfer him this summer, especially after securing a place in the Champions League for next season.
"I expect Haaland to play for us next season, I am totally relaxed about it," the German club's general manager Hans-Joachim Watzke said. "Real Madrid and Barcelona know the contractual situation and our position."
The 75 million euro release clause
Real Madrid are also aware of a release clause in the 21-year-old striker's contract which would allow him to leave Dortmund in the summer of 2022 for just 75 million euros. That would be a bargain for the sensation of the season with 41 goals in 41 games.
Real Madrid were made aware of this possibility at a meeting on April 1 at Valdebebas with the player's father, Alf-Inge Haaland, and his agent, Mino Raiola.
In that meeting, Raiola shared that Dortmund would end up accepting a bid in excess of 140 million this summer, despite their claims to the contrary.
On a less positive note, Haaland's wage demands are significant, requesting a salary of 30 million euros net per year, with 40 million euros in commission to be shared between the father and the agent.
Despite his impressive numbers, such substantial figures have concerned some at Real Madrid when talking about a player with one season at an elite level.
Real Madrid believe that Raiola could complicate negotiations, but they know that the Norwegian has made it clear that he would like to play for the club.
Add in the good relationship between president Perez and Dortmund's president, Reinhard Rauball, and it could help matters in talks, with competition from the Premier League in Haaland's services.
