Real Madrid's undefeated start to the 2022/23 LaLiga Santander season continued on Saturday evening. Carlo Ancelotti's charges made up for the recent draw with Osasuna by defeating Getafe 1-0 at Estadio Coliseum Alfonso Perez.
The Italian coach was buoyed by a midweek masterclass against Shakhtar Donetsk, whilst Getafe continue to struggle domestically following an infinitely successful number of years.
Eder Militao made the difference
In a team with the attacking wonderment of the current iteration of Real Madrid, it is a major surprise when a central defender makes the difference in attack.
Without Eder Militao's goal on Saturday, Los Merengues wouldn't have taken all three points.
In fairness Real Madrid were once again without Karim Benzema. Ancelotti was forced to utilize Rodrygo Goes as a false-nine with support from Federico Valverde and Vinicius Jr on either flank.
The lack of a focal point impacted the team's attacking moves, although it took just three minutes for the visitors to find the net.
A well-taken corner was whipped into the penalty area and found the Brazilian defender. Militao headed the ball just under the crossbar with expert precision to hand Real Madrid the perfect start.
Real Madrid were denied a controversial penalty
Whilst the first-half offered little in the way of goal-mouth action, the visitors thought they had been awarded a spot-kick just two minutes before half-time.
Luis Milla looked to have taken down Vinicius in his own penalty area, and the referee deemed a foul had been committed.
A penalty was the signal, but VAR intervened as the ball had gone out of play in the build up.
David Soria was a thorn in Los Merengues' side throughout the match. The Getafe goalkeeper made amazing saves from Rodrygo either side of the interval. The Brazilian just couldn't find a way beyond the stopper.
This was, until, the 57th minute of play. Rodrygo collected the ball inside the penalty area after a fantastic team move and slid his shot under the onrushing Soria.
A goal was awarded, however VAR determined there had been an offside in the build-up and the goal wouldn't count.
Real Madrid are charging back to the top of LaLiga
The win takes Los Blancos three points clear of Barcelona. It is incredibly important for the team to win without Benzema, especially with the Clasico coming next.
A three-point lead is a good cushion at this stage of a season and the signs are there that Real Madrid are once again the team to beat in Spain.
