Five years since its founding
The idea of the Super League was born five years ago. On April 19, 2021, the news exclusively revealed by MARCA became official. Real Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico, Milan, Arsenal, Chelsea, Inter, Juve, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham signed up as founding clubs of the new competition, which was intended to be an alternative to the Champions League. Florentino Perez became the first president of the Super League.
On that day, the statement issued announcing the launch of the Super League read as follows: "Twelve of Europe's leading football clubs today announce that they have agreed to establish a new midweek competition, the Super League, governed by its Founding Clubs.
AC Milan, Arsenal FC, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea FC, FC Barcelona, FC Internazionale Milano, Juventus FC, Liverpool FC, Manchester City, Manchester United, Real Madrid CF and Tottenham Hotspur have joined as Founding Clubs. Three other clubs will be invited to join before the inaugural season begins.
Looking to the future, the Founding Clubs hope to hold talks with UEFA and FIFA in search of the best solutions for the Super League and for world football as a whole.
