AC Milan battled back from a goal down to beat Inter 3-2 in a thrilling Derby della Madonnina, with Rafael Leao's standout performance proving the difference between the Serie A sides.
The two rivals entered Saturday's match separated by one point in the standings, and it was the Nerazzurri who jumped ahead after some early Milan pressure.
Lautaro Martinez combined with Joaquin Correa, and the Argentine managed to find Marcelo Brozovic in the middle of the Rossoneri defence.
The Croatian kept his cool to open the scoring, his third goal in the Derby della Madonnina.
However, the Rossoneri levelled the score just seven minutes later. Sandro Tonali gained possession after a poor Hakan Calhanoglu pass, setting up Leao.
The Portuguese forward fired a first-time strike that Samir Handanovic could only get a hand on.
Milan continued to pour forward, but had to wait until the second half to take the lead. Leao's pull-back found Olivier Giroud, who turned and sent a precise strike into the far bottom corner.
The two combined again to make it 3-1, with Leao dribbling past three Inter defenders before scoring from a tight angle to the delight of the Rossoneri faithful.
The end-to-end action didn't end there as Inter got themselves back into the match in the 67th minute.
Henrikh Mkhitaryan's pull back found fellow substitute Edin Dzeko, and the Bosnian turned it in off the inside of the near post.
Inter came close to levelling the score on several occasions, with Mike Maignan stopping a close-range Lautaro Martinez header.
The Frenchman then used his legs to deny Dzeko, before palming away a Calhanoglu blast from distance.
The saves proved decisive as Milan held on to move to the top of the Serie A standings for the time being with 11 points, while Inter remain on nine after five matches played.
