Hailed as a 'Tottenham legend' before kick-off against Aston Villa, Harry Kane was treated to a rapturous reception by fans... but despite the talisman looking as determined as ever in the defeat, there was more than a hint of goodbye at full-time

Harry Kane was put through an emotional ringer during Tottenham's 2-1 defeat by Aston Villa on Wednesday, a game which may very well prove to be his last at home for the club.

The wantaway Spurs striker was greeted with a rapturous response before the game, as supporters made their feelings towards their talisman clear, but the atmosphere soon soured across the 90 minutes.

By full-time, Kane was left to solemnly embark on a slow lap of appreciation around the pitch before heading down the tunnel, possibly for the final time in a Spurs shirt.

Sportsmail's MATT BARLOW was on Kane watch for the fixture. Here is what he saw...

PRE-MATCH

Kane scarves are prominent among the High Street traders. They hail 'One of our Own' and his quest for the Golden Boot. In the stands, banners out in force.

One is unfurled in the South Stand during the warm-ups. White letters on a blue background, it reads 'Harry Kane Tottenham Legend' and generates a round of applause when it appears on the big screens.

Kane confirmed as winner of this season's Player of the Year award, voted for by the fans.

CROWD REACTION

An enormous cheer greeted the Tottenham number 10 when the teams were read out before kick-off and 10,000 Spurs fans were barely a minute into the game before they launched into a chorus of their Kane song.

And another, five minutes later, but they were subdued by the pattern of the game, grew impatient as Spurs struggled and, trailing with 25 minutes to go, were chanting the name of Gareth Bale and singing 'Sixty quid, you're having a laugh'.

BODY LANGUAGE

Pensive as the teams emerged. A little wary, perhaps. Or simply super-focused and determined as ever.

Gathered teammates for a huddle and a pep-talk in the tunnel before they return to the pitch for the second half.

Refused to complain or let his shoulders drop as Spurs struggled.

In the referee's ear as Jack Grealish took ages passing the captain's armband to Tyrone Mings before he was replaced by Douglas Luiz.

IN GAME

Barely involved as Aston Villa dominated the first half. There as one flash of quality, a change of pace and cross from the left, easily intercepted by Villa keeper Emi Martinez.

There was more in the second half: a break down the left early and a poor cross, a strong run and pass to Steven Bergwijn, who failed to beat Martinez.

His first effort at goal came in the 54 minute, volley at back post from a cross by Sergio Reguilon cross. It flew over from an impossible. Then came his best chance, a low drive, deflected by Tyrone Mings and beaten out by Martinez at his near post.

POST-MATCH

Solemn handshakes with Villa players and a slow lap of appreciation in keeping with the rest of Tottenham's season. Most of the Spurs players made a swift exit down the tunnel.

Kane walked alone towards the South Stand and applauded. The fans returned the gesture. He continued around the pitch, alone. A few teammates trailed after him.

There was more than a hint of goodbye, a little wave to someone in the top tier above the press seats and an exchange with Dean Smith, who slapped the England captain on the back as he disappeared down the tunnel.

Possibly for the last time in a Spurs shirt.

Eventually, they came back out for a second lap to encourage fans to leave the stadium and go home.
