Tottenham confirm Son Heung-min will have surgery on a fractured eye socket suffered in 2-1 win over Marseille, with forward set miss Liverpool clash... but there is optimism he will return in time to play at World Cup with South Korea
Heung-min Son will undergo surgery to repair a fractured cheekbone raising concerns over his World Cup dream.
As MailOnline exclusively revealed yesterday, the forward underwent tests amid fears he had suffered a break of the zygomatic bone on the left side of his face in the brutal aerial challenge with Chancel Mbemba in Tuesday’s Champions League win in Marseille.
And on Wednesday night, Spurs confirmed Son needs an operation to fix the damage caused by the sickening collision.

Tottenham confirmed the South Korean will need surgery for a fracture around his left eye
‘Following surgery, Son will commence rehabilitation with our medical staff and we shall update supporters further in due course,’ read a Spurs statement.
The news leaves Son facing waiting to discover whether he can play in the World Cup with South Korea, though there is understood to be significant hope that the forward will be available for Qatar provided his recovery goes according to plan.
Son will undergo the surgery before the end of the week which means it is highly likely he misses Sunday’s clash against Liverpool.
But when he is next available for selection will depend on how he recovers from the operation.

Indeed, sources were not ruling out that Son could be fitted with a protective mask with a view to being available for the last Premier League game before Qatar - against Leeds on November 12.
The prospect of losing Son for the games against Liverpool and Leeds will come as a blow to Tottenham boss Antonio Conte whose forward line is already ravaged by injury.
Richarlison and Dejan Kulusevski are currently unavailable meaning Harry Kane and Lucas Moura are Tottenham’s only fit forwards if Son cannot play this weekend.
As well as determining the extent of the damage to his cheekbone, Son was also undergoing concussion checks on Wednesday.
The initial indications were that Son did not suffer a concussion but if he has suffered head trauma, he will have to spend a mandatory six days out of action.

Meanwhile, key defender Cristian Romero has suffered a muscle strain that is expected to keep him out until the World Cup.
Conte’s players were off on Wednesday and have another free day today as reward for their 2-1 win in Marseille that booked their place in the Champions League last 16.
After the defeat in against Sporting in Lisbon, the Spurs manager made his players report for an 11am training session despite the fact they’d arrived back from Portugal just a few hours earlier.
But Conte showed his softer after returning from France during the early hours of Wednesday morning by giving them two consecutive days off ahead of the game against Liverpool on Sunday.
