'You know what he's like - he blames other people': Antonio Conte will quit Tottenham at the end of the season if there's no Champions League, says Robbie Mustoe

Robbie Mustoe has predicted Antonio Conte will leave Tottenham at the end of the season if he fails to guide the team back into the Champions League again.

Tottenham is fifth in the Premier League standings and meets Aston Villa in the early New Year's Day game needing to record a victory after being held to a 2-2 tie by Brentford in the first game back from the World Cup.

Spurs boss Conte has a contract until the end of the season with the option to extend for a further year but has threatened to walk out on the job before.

Mustoe, speaking on NBC, thinks the Italian will leave if he fails to get Tottenham back in the Champions League again.

'His contract is up at the end of the season,' Mustoe said. 'If he doesn't get in the top four, you know what he's like - he blames other people and other things, money and everything else - it feels like this project is going to come to an end.

'I think we are in the real nitty gritty point right now. Can they find a way to get his real vision in play now or is it still going to be inconsistent?'

Spurs are currently fifth in the Premier League standings before Sunday's game with Villa. Liverpool leads the chasing pack with Chelsea also outside the top four, while Newcastle continues to surprise and is third on 34 points.

Tottenham's tie with Brentford came with Conte's team 2-0 down and while the score represents two lost points, it could easily have been much worse.

Mustoe pointed to Christian Romero and star striker Harry Kane as two key players for Tottenham's efforts to reach the Champions League.

'What if Kane gets injured? They're going to go down like a stone, there is nobody else scoring goals at the moment' Mustoe said.

'Romero is back and he's a brilliant defender and a world champion now with Argentina.

Tottenham is in this season's Champions League and plays Italian giant AC Milan in the last-16.

After Villa, Tottenham play Crystal Palace on January 4 before the FA Cup starts.
