Tottenham's 'win now' strategy of hiring high-profile managers has FAILED miserably with Conte the latest big name to get the boot... Spurs need a long-term rebuild under the right coach - like Arsenal - to take them forward - but who is the right choice?

Here we go again. Back to square one. Tottenham have sacked another high-profile manager and nothing to show for it.

Antonio Conte was given his marching orders late on Sunday and now he's out the door following his quite explosive rant that slammed the club and his players in 10 extraordinary minutes.

It means Daniel Levy is now looking for his fourth permanent manager since sacking Mauricio Pochettino in 2019, leaving fans frustrated after yet more failure.

Levy's recruitment strategy is, once again, under the spotlight. The Spurs chairman brought Conte in to help instill a 'winning mentality' and finally end their trophy drought – the same task given to Jose Mourinho when he succeeded Pochettino.

But both managers – who have won trophies at nearly every other club they've managed – didn't even last 18 months in north London and left under a very dark cloud.

What makes Conte's appointment – and Nuno Espirito Santo's disastrous short reign before that – even worse is that Levy told fans that they can the expect to see the return of 'free-flowing, attacking and entertaining football' – what Levy dubbed as 'Tottenham's DNA'.

WHO WILL SUCCEED CONTE THIS SUMMER?

Julian Nagelsmann - 15/8

Mauricio Pochettino - 3/1

Oliver Glasner - 5/1

Luis Enrique - 9/1

Zinedine Zidane - 11/1

Thomas Frank - 12/1

Roberto De Zerbi - 14/1

Ange Postecoglou - 18/1

Michael Carrick - 25/1

Jose Mourinho - 66/1

While 'Conte-ball' was in full effect in the final few months of the 2021-22 campaign which saw the Italian secure a fourth-place finish and Champions League football, the style of play this season has been slow, tedious and predictable, with fans left even more infuriated by Conte's lack of a Plan B.

Since Pochettino's sacking, Spurs have ditched the idea of promoting younger talent from within and buying into short-term solutions that haven't worked.

Levy's 'win now' approach to hiring high-profile managers has failed miserably and now the writing is on the wall.

Instead of trying to be a knock-off version of Chelsea, Spurs now need to cut their losses and start what could be a long and painful rebuild.

They shouldn't look to far for inspiration, either, especially when you peer across town and see the fantastic job Mikel Arteta is doing.

Currently eight points clear at the top of the Premier League table, the Gunners are on course to win their first league title in two decades. And the fact the club's board have stuck by Arteta through thick and thin over several years makes it that much sweeter for Arsenal.

This should be the blueprint that Levy now follows and his next appointment needs to finally back up his promise of restoring the club's DNA on the pitch.

But with Conte gone, who is the right man to take Spurs forward and make them into a force domestically and on the continent? Sportsmail take a look a few candidates.

Julian Nagelsmann

The bookies favourite – and for good reason.

The 35-year-old is on an upwards trajectory, with his stints at Hoffenheim, RB Leipzig, and most recently, Bayern Munich showing he is on course to becoming one of the best coaches Europe will have to offer in the not too distant future.

Tottenham have wanted him before he was at Bayern and Sportsmail understands that they've put him back to the top of their list for succeeding Conte in the summer.

Nagelsmann certainly fits the bill when it comes to providing free-flowing, attacking and entertaining football, as set out by Levy, and the task of rebuilding a club he is said to have a 'soft spot' for could be exactly what the club needs over the next five or six years.

It has been reported that Nagelsmann forged a real connection with how Pochettino's Spurs played during his five-and-a-half years at the club, with the German a firm believer that pressing high up and from the front is the way he wants his teams to play.

His stock is sky high at the moment – even after being sacked by Bayern – and would be the ideal fit for what Spurs need to turn their fortunes around.

Mauricio Pochettino

While Nagelsmann may be the bookies' favourite, Pochettino still very much remains a fan favourite at Spurs.

The argument 'stick with what you know' does ring true when it comes to Pochettino, given Spurs haven't had near anywhere the same success (relatively speaking) since he's been in charge.

It cannot be argued that Levy should have backed Pochettino to rebuild the club in the summer of 2019, months before he was shown the exit.

But while 2019 would have been the best time to back the Argentine to rebuild, the next best time would be now if he was to return to the club.

Spurs have what will surely be a tricky few seasons ahead, with Harry Kane entering the final year of his deal this summer while Son Heung-min is the wrong side of 30.

And with plenty of unfinished business in north London, it would certainly be a popular decision to bring Pochettino back if the club are unable to bring in Nagelsmann.

Oliver Glasner

A left-field choice for sure, Oliver Glasner wouldn't have been the first name on Spurs fans' lips when Conte was sacked on Sunday evening.

The Eintracht Frankfurt boss has worked wonders with the German club and has a Europa League winner's medal to his name following their triumph in the competition last season.

While Spurs fans may wince at the idea that Glasner plays in a 3-4-2-1 system – the same formation Conte stubbornly used – Glasner has shown exactly how to get the best out of it, so there will only need to be a few tweaks made to how Spurs currently play.

Unlike Nagelsmann and Pochettino, Glasner will not have the same stock that the other two carry and should things turn south quickly, then Levy could find himself with out Nuno situation.

Spurs supporters have run out of patience but give them a name they can trust and they could be more forgiving to trust the process.

Glasner has shown what he can do with a squad like Frankfurt's, but his arrival could divide a fanbase in a period that needs unity.

Roberto De Zerbi

Premier League ready and doing a great job at that, Roberto De Zerbi is unproven at a 'big club' but making all the right noises on the south coast. Remind you of anyone?

While it's premature to say that De Zerbi is Pochettino 2.0 in waiting, it's hard to argue how fantastic a job he's done at Brighton this season.

Following Graham Potter's stellar reign with the Seagulls, it would have been hard to imagine anyone coming in and matching the now-Chelsea boss – but De Zerbi has done just that.

His possession-based football and no-nonsense approach make him an ideal candidate to help rebuild the club if he is backed by Levy.

But Spurs fans beware: taking a manager from an over-achieving Premier League team can go one of two ways, and Levy will need to be certain that it's a Pochettino-success story he's getting rather that a Nuno disaster-class.

Luis Enrique

Luis Enrique, who was most recently in charge of the Spain national team, is the continental approach for Tottenham and is currently available.

His style of play would certainly be attractive on the eye, but question marks hang over him, given he has been out of the club management circuit for quite some time.

Enrique is also yet to manage in the Premier League but the Spaniard's experience at Barcelona will allay fears that he has been out of club management since 2017.

The 52-year-old ticks plenty of boxes and would certainly be a sure-fire way to get fans onside, but it remains to be seen if the former Roma and Celta Vigo manager could spearhead a five-year project in turning Tottenham into a juggernaut.
